for self defence pistol or or revolver ?

Post by naveen.navodaya » Fri Mar 26, 2010 8:31 am

hi all,

let me introduce myself, I am naveen , i have been long observing the forms ,though this is my first post . i have aquired a All India licence recently for a NP bore pistol/revolver , and have a little time of less than 2 months to make my choice.
I wanted guidance from u all , Iam intrested in some sleek weapon , which should ofcourse be relaible .My budget can be streched upto 5 lack. And have always the confusion weather to go for a revolver / pistol ? And what make . I would also like to be clarified which caliber .32 or .22 would be appropriate for a sleek /self defence requirement. Though i have read lot of threads with diverciifed opinions , still would like have a final word.

thanks

naveen :D

Hi Naveen
Congrats for your licence. You can find pros and cons on this link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handgun#Se ... _revolvers

Here are my two cents, Go for a revolver, now this is totally a personal preference. The reasons are
1. I beleive revolvers are more reliable, I beleive its a simple thing so less parts which will go wrong
2. Finally I find revolvers very cool and classy...

Hi Naveen,i dont wanna be a wet blanket, congrats on your Arms licence, but just a word of caution, arms licences are issued for state to which you belong first, after a weapon is endorsed on it,the Arms licence on recommendation of the issuing authority is forwarded to the Home Department for extension of area of validity to All India for Pistol/Revolver and 4 states for Gun/Rifle.The only execption for area of validty is members of NRAI,so please do check with the licencing authority regarding this.
As per as my humble opinion go for a 22 Pistol, ammo is cheap and getting it is no problem, its smaller and loaded with the right ammo its more lethal then a 32.all the best

You have not provided enough information for anyone to give you an accurate suggestion but I am going to try my best to give you a general idea.

Between a .22 and .32 I would go with the .32 for 2 reasons reliability & stopping power. If you must buy a .22 get a good quality .22 revolver as a lot of .22 pistols even ones from reputed companies have FTF (failure to feed) problems with the .22 rounds. On the other hand if you decide to go with the .32 then you have to make your next major decision between a pistol or a revolver. Since your budget will get you a quality pistol the difference in reliability is going to be marginal thus I would recommend going with the pistol. I have carried a gun for almost 10 years now and from personal experience I can tell you if you are going to carry inside the waist band then the pistols slim profile is very beneficial. Secondly unless you get a hammerless revolver the design of most revolvers hammers snag onto clothing. Thirdly you have 6 shots with a revolver and a very slow reload; on the other hand your pistol carries more rounds and has the capability of quicker reloads. With practice you should be able to master the pistol to a point where you will be able to use it reliably and efficiently.

I have shot IDPA competition where one has to draw and fire in different scenarios. The time for every round is significantly less when using a pistol as opposed to a wheel gun. In an emergency situation you don’t get points for fighting fair or using a cooler looking weapon, the goal is to neutralize the threat as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Hi Naveen,

Congratulation for procuring a handgun licence, I would suggest go in for revolver cause you are buying a a hngun for self defence, its much safer than a pistol in many aspects as pistol may suffer a jam if a cartridge misfires due to the blowback action, but the revolver would have another round ready if the earlier one misfires, and many more reasons can be justified.

From what I understand, both the attackers and the victim were using illegal arms.So the pistol in question might even be a crude desi copy or maybe a beat up old piece picked up from some where.

brijendera

Its a very general statement that IOF Ashani isnt reliable because with R and R done by a decent gun smith it turns out to be quite a reliable gun. You can check the forum here for such work done on IOF guns. More importantly these IOF guns are known commodity compared to other 'Phoen' stuff available. therefore they offer pretty good bang for the buck for folks on a budget. They arent perfect but rather would have an IOF than a say 40 years old gun being purchased at ridiculous price. Its sad but IOF is the only game in the town for most of the folks..Just train and know your gun better for safety,
Best

Dear Friends,
As I received some information that within few month Government of Indian is lifting the restriction of Import of a Foreign Made Weapons of NPB, for a period of One Years, so I hope that the peoples will import the weapons such as Revolver & Pistols from USA , Germany.
If the people have the passions they may get the Brand-New Weapons on the half price of IOB Pistols/ Revolvers plus the customs Duty.
