Modifying IOF .22 Rifle- Need Advice

Hi guys,

I have purchased a .22 IOF rifle from our friendly neighborhood Garg Armory, Delhi.
They have been nice enough to sell it at the controlled rates.... and allow me to select a good piece of my choice.

I went there with our big gun Abhijeet and from among 3-4 rifles, we managed to find a rifle with the stock intact and without any cracks. The trigger pull was also surprisingly decent and even the safety of this piece was working…..

I request your advice on possible modifications I should get including the customary aesthetic improvements like polish, etc.
I want to mount a scope (3-9x40 or similar) and use it for target practice-open sight.

Looking forward to your suggestions/experiences.

Any experience with the bluing IOF .22 rifle? Which bluing process do you suggest?

Isn’t the original powder coating more lasting ?

walnut wood stock with best colour,grains would be fine .
as far as bluing it should be given to good handed gunsmith.
powder coating is only for steel furniture and not for sports goods

Getting a new stock (assuming it's a sporter stock), barrel reprofiled and action blued isn't necessary. Considering the quality of work of workmanship in this country I would consider this a waste of money unless you are prepared to pay Bobby Sidhu's prices. Quality costs money.

What you should do is:

1) Clean out that terrible inletting.

2) Freefloat the barrel.

3) Glass bed or pillar bed the action. I have done the latter as I did not have glass bedding compound.

4) Chage the slot headed screws to allen screws and invest in a torque wrench. You may have to experiment with different torque settings from 4.5 N-m to 6 N-m to see which setting gives you the best groups. Mine is at 5.5 N-m for the action screws and 6.0 N-m for the scope mount screws. I can strip the entire rifle and reassemble it without loosing my zero. What you save on rezeroing costs will eventually pay for the torque wrench. It also allows you to remove your scope to use the open sights and then put the scope back without loosing zero.

5) Recrown the muzzle. I have used a 11 degree target crown.

6) Lap the bolt rails to make things a little smoother if it isn't already. Don't go overboard with the lapping process.

7) Change the trigger hinge pin to one with tighter tolerances. You will need to machine this.

8 ) Buy yourself a straight tubed scope rather than one with an objective bell. A board member recently brought me a second hand Simmons WTC 1.5-5x20 (thanks mate!) and I couldn't be happier. Unfortunately, you will not be able to use a low mount because this brings the 'eye bell' too low for the bolt to open fully. However, the medium height mounts are still an improvement on the high mounts that I had to use previously. I prefer to lap my scopemount rings so as to get flush/even fit on the scope tube.

9) Last but not least and this is optional and you take full responsibility if you decide to do this - have your gunsmith cut the barrel down to no less than 1/2" over the legal minimum of 20".

The license in Form IX should specifically mention 'shorten'.The barrel can't be shortened to less than 20" and the intimation of this having been undertaken, has to be given to the licensing authority.

I guess, I'll not get into the barrel shortening now.....will make do with other improvements.....

I might be a bit too late in giving you my two cents of advice. Before doing any changes to the IOF .22 rifle , kindly take it to the range and put several shots through it just to see how does the rifle "fit" you and how well does it perform. Its a good idea to use imported ammo that time 'coz a lot of problems with the KF ammo might be blamed on the performance of a rather "innocent " rifle.

The powder coating is more durable than the bluing though the later might look better. Please consider that tapering or shortening the barrel is going to decrease the resale value of your rifle. If I guess correctly , then you will not keep the IOF .22 rifle with you for a longish time and as soon as you get a reasonable BRNO or something similar, you will invest in that . So my friend , my point is , why spend unnecessarily on the IOF getting it radically modified and losing on the resale value ? You can however get the stock/checkering/colour sorted out according to your own liking ( AC made one green full stock for a client's IOF.22 ). By the way , the bolt gradually gets better once you put a few hundred bullets through the rifle.
