Got H&R 5 Shot Revolver
Hi All,
I have got my license cleared last month, Saturday I have collected my license and fortunately got a nice condition revolver from my grandfather's friend. I still cannot believe this but now I own an antique Top break H&R.
It is five shot, Top Break, Double action revolver with about 400gms weight, S&W short cartages cylinder. It is very convenient to carry and conceal with 3inch Barrel, I have fired five shots yesterday and it gone BANG….BANG….BANG….BANG....BANG.
I have fired all five rounds within 10 seconds and the Barrel and Cylinder were absolutely fine I got amazed when I touched the barrel the temperature was like 100 Fahrenheit (just like human body). It has HARRINGTON-RICHARDSON ARMS CO MAS USA 1895 on its barrel but I couldn’t find the serial number, I has word England near the grips (I have done some research and found that they have sold some under NEW ENGLAND patent.
I have got a picture from internet; it has same condition as this model has http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:H%26R_Top_Break.jpg. I will upload some pictures once the paper work has completed and the beauty is in my hands.
Thanks,
Wajhi

Congratulations Wajhi ,
Two questions -
1. If your revolver has no serial number, how are you going to get it endorsed on your firearm license ?
2. Is S&W short ammo readily available at/around your place ?
Oh by the way, 100*F amounts to low grade fever in humans .
best,
Rp.

Re: Got H&R 5 Shot Revolver
Thanks a lot for your feedbacks GURUS.
Grewal Sahab-
I think condition is my gun in very good and I don't need an IOF revolver for backup, When I have inspected the barrel the grooves were nice as my brother's A series Webley and rest of things seemed OK to me (I am not getting offensive). I have got this from a trust worthy resource and he is known to our family since 3 generations, He asked me to show this to a gunsmith but I didn’t do this because of his respect as he had to go with me for this. He didn’t want to give me the weapon before transfer from his license to mine, He had an incident where his friend shot somebody from his Double Barrel in 1978 and he got murder charges on him, tough the judgement was in his favour but he had a tough lesson.
Doc Sahab-
This weapon is registered on his license and getting any ammo is difficult in my area as dealers sell them in black market, I have called one dealer and he told me that he doesn’t have either of revolver ammo. So I have to find some other source. I don’t think that KF has discontinued the manufacturing of S&W short ammo, but I am not confirmed.
I knew that you will definitely comment on 100 Degree Fahrenheit temperature
, I am in fever because I had to leave my city as I work in Noida and I had to join the office, I am dying to carry this but cant to this before mid of Feb (My boss is coming from London for a week )
Jayakumar Sahab-
It is registered on sellers licenses a reply on the internet could be a reason why I couldn’t find that serial number.
"Left side of grip strap at bottom: Serial Number 1890-1906 (grips must be removed to see)."
Thanks Everyone, Now I believe that I have taken a good decision to drop IOF.

Rp I know someone who has a savage 22 repeater, It also doesn't has a serial number. Everytime he goes to renew his licence he faces a lot of problem regarding verification of the weapon. There is a Alphanumeric word inscribed on his barrel which he interprets as the serial number ( eg it says " EKGBD" So E= 5, K=11, G=7, B=2,D=4 . So the serial number as per his interpretation is 511724. ) He did'nt had any trouble since he got this rifle in the mid seventies, secondly it is entered as NPB . But this time when he got the licence renewed last november he had a tough time to convince the authorities with his theory of interpretation of the "so called serial number"The Doc wrote:1. Grewal Sahab and Doc Sahab,
I am really thankful for your efforts, I have gone through the link it is very useful. I will update you once I have got the paper work done and will let you know the serial number, I could have seen his license to get the serial number but he is my grand father's friend and very polite so I did not bother him.
I must say a big thank you to both of you, you guys are absolutely STAR

A word of caution pal, it is not a good idea to disclose the serial number of your firearm in an open forum .Wajhi wrote: I will update you once I have got the paper work done and will let you know the serial number

Many H&R revolvers have the serial numbers on the bottom side of the butt. Looks like you will soon have a very fine pistol.

Re: Got H&R 5 Shot Revolver
While that my be true in India, please note that all US made firearms did not have serial numbers.BTW sale of a firearm without a serial number is illegal
Prior to 1958, there was no requirement to have serial numbers on firearms and even after that .22 caliber rifles were exempt. After the Gun Control Act of 1968, all firearms were required to have serial numbers. So it is quite possible that the OP's gun could lack a serial number.
That being said, look on the butt of the gun or remove the grips and check the frame to see if there is any kind of number stamped there.
Keep in mind also that if there are no caliber markings on the gun, it's possible that it could be meant for black powder cartridges and it would not be prudent to fire modern smokeless powder cartridges in it.

Re: Got H&R 5 Shot Revolver
I have got license number on the revolver and it says 176xxx, it has England on his butt and has a lanyard in the butt.
I think it is an old British service revolver which was exported to Britain, I have discursed this with my boss who is ex British Army and he said that British service revolver had lanyard.
Any idea on my theory?

Re: Got H&R 5 Shot Revolver
A lanyard does not make it British. If it were an ex-British service revolver, it would be in .380/200, a.k.a. .38 S&W. And it would have the "broad arrow" stamp. That would also it make a PB weapon in India.
