Need Detail info on selecting Pistol.

Post by kalki » Tue Nov 23, 2010 2:27 pm

Dear Gurus,

I want to apply for a pistol license In Calcutta/Bangalore. I dig a lot into database and found the following:

1> No single caliber for pistol is the best. It depend on the need, situation, stopping power.......etc...
2> among .45 (PB in India), .40 (PB in India??),9 mm (PB in India??),.38(PB in India), .357 (PB in India??) the best optimum is .357 Mugnum. Is this ture?
3> Can we have a list of PB and NPB in India?
4> How to start the process to apply for gun license in India? (step -by-step) please.
5> I donot like IOF products anyway. can I import a .357 Mug. or .40 s&W pistol from USA? via somebody?
6> Can I apply for a 30-06 imported rifle? (In future)

I am sure lots of other friends have some or all of these questions also in their mind.

Best regards,

Kalki

Oh NO

I doubt if you would be able to import Fire Arm even if you have a valid licence.

Import of .22 LR, Shotguns, Pistols are restricted to renowned shooters with several regulations.

from many points of view best buy for first hand gun is IOF.32 revolver.
from pistols (in my liking ) hummerli .22 is possible to find for reasonable price, maybe some other imported .22 in good condition also, as not so many people like .22

most of these questions have been discussed many time already

Dear All Gurus,

Thanks a lot for your very prompt reply.

I checked the urls and found most of the answers.

But...one still remain.

.357 Mugnum is best? I see this is into NPB. If IOF donot have .357 Mugnum pistol then how could I buy one without importing??

I will not go got .22 or IOF.32 revolver/pistol for many reason. (please donot mind Mr. das.... by the way I am a beng too..) :)

Look Kalki, let's start things in little steps, shall we. So in order, you need to:

First: Apply for your pistol license.
Second: obtain it.
Third: THEN, continue discussions, by which time you would hopefully have delved a lot more into the wealth on IFG and elsewhere and made your mind up

Please note: I am not discouraging you, merely asking you to be pragmatic

Dear hamiclar01,

Thanks for your suggestion. but I would like to work in the German way of Project Management.

before entering into new project I want to have the detail plan with me. So that each and every need can be estimated in advance.

So, still I am waiting for the answer of the last question:

============================================================================================================

Welcome to the Indian way of Project Management Kalki!
Here's what you can do if you want a NPB that is not being manufactured in India or not being allowed to be imported anymore. You can still buy one used (If you can find someone willing to sell them) that was imported into the country before the ban on import of weapons kicked into place.

Cheers!

Can you please clearly enumerate the reasons point wise why you do not want to go for .22 or IOF .32? BTW one officer of MARCOS had expressed his choice for buying IOF .22. Do you have any reason which he might have overlooked? Please let us all know. If you want to know who the MARCOS are please read the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MARCOS_%28India%29
.357 Mugnum is the best for pistol ?? I see this is into NPB.
Yes .357 Magnum is NPB. Please take it off from your mind that there is something called "the best" pistol or "the worst" pistol in absolute terms. It is all defined by your purpose and how skilled you are in using it. .22lr has one of the highest number of kills attributed to it. One of "the best" secret services of many countries use .22lr for their undercover operations. If you even have "the best" pistol/revolver like you say the .357 magnum, but do not have the skill to place the shot in correct place in the target, how is that going to help you? On the other hand if you have "the worst" pistol but you have the skill to place the shot in your target at correct place, how that will handicap you?
If IOF donot have .357 Mugnum pistol then how could I buy one without importing??
You can buy one without importing if you have the amount of money to buy from arms dealers or arms license holders willing to sell in India. Since there is no yardstick to define the prevailing market prices of "foreign made" firearms, even though their quality and reliability might be as good as junk, because the sellers are able to find buyers who are willing to pay the unreasonable price for such products. It is my guess that price of .357 Magnum revolver might be around Rs 10 to 15 lakhs and price of .357 Magnum ammunition might be around Rs 350 or more per cartridge. You can visit or contact any gun gunshop to confirm the exact price. Having said all this, most of the buyers in India prefer to buy IOF products because of mainly two reasons:
1) They do not have any other choice, because that choice is beyond their practical financial reach.
2) Even if they can purchase "foreign" made firearms, they think it wise to spend only around Rs 1 lakh for IOF products and keep the rest of money invested wisely somewhere else.
Hope I have answered all your queries. If you still have some queries please feel free to ask.

Suit yourself, though didn't realise the pragmatic Deutsche indulged in Khayaali Pulaav  My German plan if i were you would be to find out the names of the DCP licensing, the station SHO, the number of licenses they grant in a year, what their current mental disposition is towards arms owners, tracing and speaking to people who have recently been granted/rejected licenses by them and so on.

There are reams of paper and acres of bandwidth spent on discussing what this so called "best" pistol is. You would have come across multiple similar queries on the handgun threads. What happens if you do decide on a calibre and model? Are you prepared to shell atrocious amounts to get it, assuming it is available? Even if you decide to spend time abroad and get it with you on TR, chances are , without an Indian license it is going to find it's way in the hands of a neta or a boy in white after an auction. I'd still suggest you be pragmatic and follow goodbye mentor's very sensible advice................

................and get yourself a license first! Wondering which handgun to buy is a fun thing to do, but is going to be the least of your worries.

Achtung Kalki !

There is nothing called "Mugnum" as far as the ammo goes (even in Germany  ) ! The correct expression is .357 S&W Magnum, or simply .357 Magnum and it is a revolver cartridge introduced in 1934, created by Elmer Keith, Phillip B. Sharpe,Colonel D. B. Wesson of firearms manufacturer Smith & Wesson, and Winchester. A very few semi-auto pistols used this round really, Desert Eagle is one of them. Others were Coonan and Auto-Mag but I guess the latter two discontinued the manufacturing. .357 magnum ammo is available in India but you gotta look hard for it and pay through your nose. It is approx. 450-500 INR a pop .

Now the .357 SIG pistol cartridge is the product of Swiss firearms manufacturer SIG-Sauer, in cooperation with the American ammunition manufacturer Federal Cartridge. Used in semi-auto pistols, the performance is almost similar to the .357 magnum round but it is rather expensive in the USA and to my knowledge not available in India.

Last but not the least , the price of a .357 magnum revolver is approx 14L in the NCR . A Desert Eagle .357 magnum pistol was in news in my neck of woods , a certain Chandigarh based dealer offered the owner a whopping 30L and the owner declined to sell !!

You could bring back a firearm if you were on TR or you were a renowned shot but clearly it is not the case here. So like all of us lesser mortals you have two options, a new firearm from IOF or a pre-owned imported or IOF firearm. What kind, what caliber and what price is your choice (read compromise.)

Oh by the way , I hope by now you would have made up your mind at least to fill in an application form for a firearm license ........

intz. Viel Glück !

In addition to this, if plan number one does not succeed, I would have a backup plan and not shy away from going to High Court and show the following to my lawyer before I go to High Court: http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 15#p117785
