How to avoid dehydration in shooting

Post by gverma » Wed Aug 18, 2010 1:09 pm

In case you do target shooting in range you would most probably be wearing the required gear. This means leather jacket and leather pants along with full inners. In our country this is bound to make you sweat and cause dehydration.

I consulted by doctor and he gave me some good advice which worked for me and I would like to share with everyone.

The advice was to prepare a dehydrating drink for oral consumption and keep sipping it while shooting. The formula is as under

Ingredients
  • Real or Tropicana Juice – I use orange; you may use anything you like. I find it better to use the one with pulp. The orange juice will give you some minerals and sugar. It will also be a source of energy. Some of my friends I share this formula with use lemonade instead.
ORS packet – This will give you all the electrolytes required and you will not feel dizzy.
Glucon – I use with Vitamin C, you may use any glucose power. This will give you instant energy.
    300 ml of water
Procedure
  • Mix the juice in water, this will make the solution around 500 ml.
Add half a packet of ORS packet and 4 spoons of glucose
Keep regularly sipping this along with regular water.

I find that 500 ml of this solution and a 1 L of water make me last around two hours.
I hope it will help other.

Thanks
Regards
Gaurav

By the way sugary drinks should normally be avoided as it gives you the shakes. I mean sugar does affect your nerves also.

Absolutely correct, sugary dinks lead to an insulin spike, which feels good momentarily, but leaves you more tired, since the trough following the spike goes lower than the normal. Stick to fresh natural juices, orange etc, fructose is good.

IFG gurus rule. Thanks for chiming in and providing TECHNICAL info.
I dont know how much the spike in insulin would be if you take sips and not gulp the whole thing.

Too much juice can also fill the bladder....gotta go gotta go.

ok, let me tell u what I do, during my regular practise & national events.....

Take a packet of Electrol....+ mix it with 1 lt of water, shake it well, and just sip it, when u feel thirsty...

That's it, nothing else is required...........Its good flavour, will boost ur stemina, u wount feel, acidic, or low of calory.......there is very very less sugar content........so u can completely 100% rely on this...

Normally all international team does this....

)))cheers!!!

Hi Amit,

How would the gator-aide powder be? I've seen some kids bring it to the range.

Gatorade is decent, I have used it during Delhi's 40 degree plus summers to good effect.Sugar content is negligible.

But you need to be a gator and not a croc to avail the full benefits.

there is also Gatorade. Another option is just to drink Ringer lactate, it is in plastic 500ml bottles for intravenous infusion. very effective, but did not test so well as Gatorade. Same as Electrol Gatorade available in pouches, but Electrol is much cheaper and better.

all it is sugar(glucose]/salt/ taste ie lemon etc mixed with water. that is the cheapest you can get.

i always recommand a can of the best lager chilled standing near by to inspare to shoot better.
