Transfer of license

Hello IFG,

I've a few questions, so will appreciate any form of help here.

My dad owned 2 arms - 1 Colt revolver & a double barrel rifle. He passed away late last year, so I need to take over from here.

When I went through his paperwork, I found that:
- his licenses are from Allahabad for both
- both licenses expired in mid 2018

The arms, along with documentation are presently in Bombay. He had got them here 8-10 years back when he moved permanently to Bombay. However he continued to renew his licenses every 3 years from Allahabad.

At this point, I plan to
i) renew the license on the revolve on my name
ii) sell off the double barrel gun

Please guide me on the same. Thanks a lot.

1. The heading of the thread is wrong. License of an expired person can not be renewed.
2. You will have to get new license for yourself. Give application to the DM of your area for issuing of new license giving the reason that you have to endorse your father's weapon (under heirloom policy)
3. I believe you have deposited both the weapons with arms dealer or police station. If not, deposit immediately.

Thanks, Vineet. This is helpful.

For depositing the weapons, do I need prior approval or documentation, or can simply show up at the arms dealer with the weapon along with the licenses & death certificate?

Arms Rules 2016, Chapter no. IV, point no. 47 says

"Provided that in case of death of a licensee, the arms or ammunition shall be deposited by the legal
representative with the officer-in-charge of the nearest police station or with a dealer holding a licence in Form
VIII, within a period of three months of the death of the licensee."

So if you deposit the weapons within three months, no permission is required. After that, permission is required. For permission, you have to give application to DM/ADM and explain them why you didn't deposit till now.
