That case is definitely .577 sized and it seems more like its been necked down to .450 or .465 rather than .500, so its definitely not a .470 or a .505 (the .505 Gibbs is one handful of cartridge!) plenty of taper on that shoulder and pretty long neck too. Quite like a rimmed .404 Jeffery or a rimmed .425 WR. Is it a .476 WR?
"With solid bullets on heavy animals such as elephant, rhino and buffalo this power is quite apparent but is not so obvious as when soft-nose bullets are being used, say, lion, particularly when is a case of stopping a charge : the .404 will stop him all right, but will seldom crumple him quite so completely as will the .416" -- John Taylor, Big Game and Big Game Rifles, (Ch. IX)

So far CC is leading  the guess work, closely followed by Zubin and Timmy.

No one seemed to have picked up the clue about the "artillery shell". Another clue is it's a proprietary cartridge.I think that makes it really easy to find out now.

To me it surely looks like the 9.3 x 57 Mauser or Norma cartridge...

Both the 9.3x57 and the .585 Nyati are rimless, so even if the mystery artillery shell looked like either of those, which it doesn't, the guesses would be off. At least, the shell sure looks rimmed to me. Also, the diameter difference base to bullet is fairly large, too large for the other N.E. cartridges mentioned, though some of them were proprietary as well. A .577/.450?, seems about right for the proportions of the cartridge.

OK gentlemen,

Thank you for participating in this little teaser and for keeping this interesting.I shall not keep you guessing any more. Zubin came very close with his .600/.577 Rewa.I wonder why anyone did not go any higher :?:  Abhijeet did tell you.

It's a .700/.577 NE Westley Richards round. 900 gr pushed at 2300 makes 10280 ft/lb!

A full report is to follow very soon.
