What cartridge be that? A .450 or .500 or thereabouts maybe?

Tirths, why the rolling eyes? Don't like powder burners :?:

Cheers!

Looks like a 505 Gibbs!

... And Vikram has big hands to boot (for those who are trying to judge the size in relation to the palms pictured)! ;)

At first sight this looks like a .404 Jeffery (10.75x73) but its rimmed...looks like a .500/.465 Nitro or a .500/.450 NItro, but I could be wrong
"With solid bullets on heavy animals such as elephant, rhino and buffalo this power is quite apparent but is not so obvious as when soft-nose bullets are being used, say, lion, particularly when is a case of stopping a charge : the .404 will stop him all right, but will seldom crumple him quite so completely as will the .416" -- John Taylor, Big Game and Big Game Rifles, (Ch. IX)

I can't say for sure, either, however, since everyone is taking a guess, I will try .577/.500 NE. I can't quite judge the size of Vikram's hand, but the rim seems so large!

.505 Gibbs is rimless. So that one is definitely out. From its shape I'd say .450/.400 3", but in Vikram's hand it looks bigger.

Could be .470

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?p ... ber=755944

and here is my Thesis Doc..

The .470 Nitro Express is a cartridge developed in England

The .470 NE was originally designed as a replacement for the .450 Nitro Express

The .470 NE continues to be popular and is the most popular of all the Nitro Express

Raja of Surguja maybe owned such rifle ( Dr. Salim Ali - one of India's most renowned ornithologist said, "In 1953 I was doing some field work in Madhya Pradesh, I met the Maharaja of Surguja. He was an old man with palsy and braced his rifle on a stick. 'i'm very happy today,' he told me. 'Why?' I asked. 'Because today I have shot my 1,100th tiger!' He ended up with 1,157".)(Sic)
