OK boys

I have a feeling that I will have to question this certification
The most powerful dart projectors are .22blank I think 12 bore will hurt a rhino also
Tranquilizer darts are only available in india thru the zoo authority in delhi

Aizawl zoo has run out of options as they cannot maintain their co2 dart guns. I suggested the cartridge fired ones as they need to occationally tranquilize the bears and bigger sambars. Other animals are 'managed' by the 'blowpipe' darts as they are usually caged.
Sambar and bear have their own moated enclosures within which they are out of range of the pipe darts. One reason their co2 guns keep breaking down is that they leave the co2 cartridge on the gun for months on end.

Hmm.. looks like I have to look elsewhere.

Thanks anyway.

Jonah, doubt that you'll be able to find a 12 gauge dart gun, or cartridges. The usual ones are actual 32 gauge, with .22 blanks providing the power; even they leave one heck of a bruise on the animal darted. The ones we used for polar bears were H&R singles with special barrels. Cheers.

hi Jonha
you mean to say that you have a zoo in your neck of the woods? heck man you should have told us that before, and we all would have come over for poached lunch. :D

we also had a zoo here but the keepers felt a little hungry and made a curry of the inmates :D

Wasnt much different here until about 5 - 6 years ago.. Zoo keepers kept filching the rations of the inmates.

www.pneudart.com does have .50 cal darts and projectors, but I dont know if its powered by a small calibre cartridge. One reason I kind of decided on the 12 cal guns is that I have seen some wildlife employees in Manas use a similar dart shot from a common 12 bore gun. And (I am thinking) since getting readymade blank cartridges would be next to impossible here, it be just a matter of removing the load and some of the powder from live 12bore rounds to get the 'appropriate' power to push the projectile.

About the bruises.. the range is going to be about 30-40 yards! Moreover, I dont think we have reached that level of finickyness here in Mizoram to be worried about a couple of bruises. Rather them than us ;-) seems to be the general attitude!

Hi Jonah,

You do get 12Bore blanks- IOF-KF makes them and many dealers stock them. The last time I checked (That was several years back) they were retailing for Rs.32 per shot in the Dimapur dealerships. Of course using them 'as-is' with darts would probably cause some severe injury...you may still need to offload some of the charge.

Jonah: .50 caliber would be the 32 gauge. Believe the guns were similar to Navy line-throwing guns. "Pneu....." would indicate that it is air or CO2 powered. My main concern would be that the commonly available darts/syringes are .50 caliber. You would have to make up a sabot to make it fit the 12 gauge, and obturate. Certainly doable, but they would have to fairly precision-made to preserve reasonable accuracy. The other problem would be balancing the payload against the powder charge and burn rate, the shotgun powder may not be what is needed. Wouldn't experiment with a nice SxS! Cheers, and good luck!

P.S. : We weren't that concerned about bruising them, either. But when one that I had darted the previous day wandered into the village and and was killed, the bruising was astounding.
