We have used old cartridges without any issues. KF paper shells do misfire but most do fire if the gun is good..Shaktiman,Astram do not give such problems..

Why are imported cartridges so difficult to be found?

Old 12 Bore Cartridge can be used safely in a Side X Side or Over Under.
(Not for Self Defence, only for Target Practice).
I am not sure how they will perform in a Pump Action Gun, it may be unsafe.
I recently unloaded couple of boxes of old KF, March 1989 Batch.
Sun each individual Cartridge for 2 to 3 hours,
(Do not shake/agitate the Cartridges, handle with complete care)
Bring the Cartridges back into the shade and allow them to cool, store them back in the Box.
Sun them again on the day of use, for 1-2 hours. Allow them to cool completely (for 2-3 hours).
Warning - Do Not apply any other form of Heat. The Cartridges 'Will Explode'.
Please be very careful when doing the above, This is Dangerous.
The above applies only to 12 Bore Cartridges and not for Pistol/Revolver or Rifle.
Caution - There may be a case of 'Hang Fire'.
Once You squeeze the Trigger, keep the muzzle in a safe direction, in-case the Cartridge does not Discharge.
Do not open the Breach immediately, if the Cartridge has not fired/discharged.
(Give it 30 Seconds - then it would be safe to open).

Jr.

Boxes of Old 12 Bore Cartridges (KF).
All manufactured by IOF.
Earlier the quality was much better than what is currently being produced by IOF.
All the Boxes contain 65MM Shells (No.1,3,4,7 Etc.)

The Shelf Life of an IOF 12 Bore Cartridge is 5 (Five) Years.
Technically and Ethically, Gun Shops should not sell Old Cartridges.
Earlier the 12 Bore Licence Holders could have an Unlimited Quota or up-to 1,000 (One Thousand) Cartridges in a Year.
Same was the Quota for .22 LR also.
(Mostly Licence issued up to the mid 1980's, for sure).
Some old Licence Holders have carried forward stock with them, which has not been used.
Kolkata for certain is One place, where many old License Holders reside.
My suggestion would be to avoid Old Cartridges.
I understand the unfortunate restrictions in India, try and get help from a Shooting Club.
'Professional Shooters' generally are helpful.

Thanks Jr. for the reply. Do help me if possible to get in touch with people with these imported cartridges. Sadly the shooting clubs here wont sell to members. Only to be used in competitions. Do help me if possible to get in touch with people with these imported cartridges.

Any particular reason you’re worried about using old cartridges in a pump shotgun!

Ammunition that’s stored as per manufacturers recommended specs should not degrade. I’ve used 1943 made .303 ammo in 1980-2” at 100y with a No. 4 SMLE. It was the most consistent in performance and was saved for competition use.

Sun them again on the day of use, for 1-2 hours. Allow them to cool completely (for 2-3 hours).

I’ve heard of this method of sunning cartridges. I do know as a fact that metallic ammunition for machine guns is fired sometimes until barrels go over a 100*C and need special gloves to be handled. Yet, the ammo WONT cook off.

My guess is this myth came to be because of loose primers in the pockets, which allowed moisture to get in and deactivate the primer compound ?
I have some 100 odd no.7 12 ga. paper cartRidges , used for DTL fun shooting. Eley. Made in 1960’s at a rough guess. Everyone of the ones fired went off with no problem. I expect the same for the remainder.

Caution - There may be a case of 'Hang Fire'.
Once You squeeze the Trigger, keep the muzzle in a safe direction, in-case the Cartridge does not Discharge.
Do not open the Breach immediately, if the Cartridge has not fired/discharged.

I had posted the photo with details in a separate post
attaching the link, hope it works, trying it for the first time.

viewtopic.php?f=21&t=26879#p258392

I am too lazy to update the photo, their may be a few additions and deletions to the inventory.
Will have to take out the boxes, all are not at the same place, some are at the Farm, look for each brand of cartridge,
Bring them to one place, align them, then photo time.
Too much work for me. I am not that old and still have age on my side but just plain lazy.
Hope you will excuse me.

Regards,
Jr.
