How many water balloons to stop a .44 Magnum bullet?

Post by mundaire » Fri Oct 30, 2015 6:59 pm

Apologies if this has been posted before.

This interesting video is just 3 minutes and well worth a watch.

These are plain simple "normal balloons" filled with water, shot at with a 250 grains jacketed bullet, with a full power .44 Magnum load!

Note down your best guess before watching the video NO CHEATING!

And yes, I got it wrong too

That was a surprise. The slow mo showing the 4th balloon streching and pulling back the bullet is super!

Fantastic; Thanks Abhijeet. I would have thought a .44 magnum shot would ramrod through all of them with ease

IIRC some years back "myth busters" had an episode where they examined under how many feet of water would a person be safe from a rifle shot from above the water surface.

I think the final result was about one foot or thereabouts for most common rifle cartridges.

Cheers!

yes it was to do with the angle thing. it all depended on what angle the bullet was fired at, at the wrong angle it would stop dead way short of target. just no been able to find any volunteer to test this on. any one out there willing?

I will let you know as soon as I find one.
But the angle at which the bullet hits the water should not make any difference as the friction will remain the same. Only difference the angle should make is that at an extreme angle may cause the bullet to ricochet off the water surface preventing it from entering the water.

It also has to do with the 'shock' the projectile encounters when passing from a rarer medium (air) to a denser medium (water).

The water absorbs and dissipates the energy of the projectile rapidly.
