Dear friends which is the best barrel material for gun .

I want to choose between SAE 4140 AND EN 24
Please do advice me .

Personally I will choose a case hardening steel like EN 36 or 20MnCr5. Easy to work on,& can be Nitrided for surface hardening at lower temp to avoid distortion in slender section like a barrel. Majority enthusiasts use free cutting steel like 1117 or 1020 just for the ease of machining. EN24 or SAE 4140 has about 28 HRC in untreated condition,and will be little tough to work inside.Requires through hardening at higher temp & quenching. :cheers:
