Too too sad. Reeks of improper discipline or absence/negligence of range safety officers.

Hi Sreenivas,
hope it was not fatal. How can a cadet be hit just because some one missed the target???? Sounds like an excuse to save asses.

The 10-day camp of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) under the 31 NCC Battalion Kerala, which began at the Nirmalagiri College, Koothuparamba, will focus as much on creation of awareness about social menaces such as alcohol and drug consumption as on drills and weapons training as part of the cadets’ training.

A total 700 cadets are participating in the camp on the college campus, half of them being girls. NCC cadets who participated in various entertainment programmes held in connection with the Onam celebration were divided into seven companies for training purposes, NCC officials said adding that inter-company contests would also be held as part of the camp.

The camp is being held under the leadership of the Battalion Commanding Officer Col. S.K. Saini. The stringent training programme included training in shooting. The officials said that 0.22 rifles are used for training. Each cadet has to fire five rounds as part of the weapons training, they said adding that the cadet adjudged best shooter would be awarded.

NCC Officer A.P. Shameer; Subedar Bihari Lal; Hawildars Bilafang Islari and Anil Kumar R. led the training. Also attending the camp are Lt. Col. P.V. Narayanan; Subedar Major K. Prakashan; NCC Officers K. Vinod Kumar, P. Vinod, C.C. Madhusoodhanan and Padmavathi.

The cadets are also being given training in pitching tents. Apart from drill training, classes would also be conducted on creating awareness about the ill-effects of alcohol and drug consumption, the organisers said. A workshop on theatre and personality development class would also be held during the camp, they added.

@ Big Daddy: no its not fatal, but cadet got shot on his shoulder. i dont know how this happens.... usually arms training is carried out under strict supervision of three or four army staffs and associate ncc officers. carelessness might be the actual reason. the cadet who got shot , actually went to re position the target when firing was going on.

the picture shown above is not actually the firing training. the guns appear in these pics are lmg(Light Machine Guns). they are dissembling and assembling the rifle (kholna - jodna). only .22 rifles ( fire arms ) are used during weapon in camps.

Narrow escape. Someone going to change targets while firing is going on points towards lack of discipline. Good thing he was hit only in the shoulder and not riddled full of holes. Poor kid!
Cheers!

Shocking to say the least...
Shows the utter lack of discipline & disregard in following "Safety Rules" by the instructors responsible for conducting the training....
Lucky for the poor victim that the bullet pierced his armpit - else a few centimeters here or there would have pierced his heart...
Wonder what caliber was in use - 0.22 or 0.303 - the latter could have created a far greater damage to the hapless victim...
Hope a stringent disciplinary action was taken on the Instructor responsible for this abominable lapse.....

The range safety officer is to blame. Every shooter much be aware of shooting disciplne first and foremost. Anyone who breaks discipline need to be kicked out of thr range immediately.

That's a sad news we should be extra careful in handling/using our guns.
