I am a new member to the IFG forum.

My brief introduction -

Age - 28
Domicile - Bengaluru, Karnataka
Currently - Seattle, Washington state
Citizenship - India

I am salivating over the prospects of getting a licenced firearm in India. I have been checking the KSRA website almost 5-6 times a week for updates. The KSRA website is pretty informative although from the discussion above it seems to be another beuracratic lumbering machine. Oh well, got to deal with what we have. I hope to get my my dad, my fiance(soon to be wife) and yours truly membership of the KSRA.
My primary interest in going through this process is to claim what is my right to own a firearm and also to enjoy plinking. Currently me and my fiance go to the ranges in the US and shoot a couple of hundred rounds every now and then. I will watch this thread and pick up any information regarding the KSRA membership process. Thanks to all members who volunteer information here.

Good to know of your interest.
Unfortunately, the procedure requires a CRT (Civilian Rifle Training) before certification for license approval. I believe there are also some others who have started this CRT since KSRA is under renovation.
If you will frequent India, then it would be good if you possess a firearm (which is a Non Prohibited Bore) for a couple of years while in the US. Come to India on one of your visits, try to get the required license here and get you US gun to India :)
What kind of guns do you shoot in the US. The drooling info is most welcome :)

I come in India in August. I will initiate the process of applying for
police verification
CRT certificate course
firearm licence

once i return for good. :)

Washington state law changes from July 26, 2009. Aliens will be allowed to obtain a firearm licence. once my work permit is renewed, i plan on applying for one and then bringing the firearm to india. i have a walther .32 in mind. Taurus .32 isnt too bad either. i was told that keltek .32 is a very good firearm.

I have shot
Ruger10-22 rifle (nice for plinking)
9 mm glock (awesome, have many hundreds of rounds on this)
.38 S&W revolver (dual action, this is the one in the avatar photo)
.22 ruger pistol (terrible)
a friends browning OU at the trap range. (beautiful piece)

Current laws dont allow issue of licences to aliens due to a some bueracratic wranglings between federal and WA state agencies. This will change and if everything works out i will be owning a browning .32
its pretty amazing that actually going to the range educates much much more than any amount of reading. i spent months reading and trying to understand. but a few visits to the range are more helpful.

I hope KSRA will be helpful towards enthusiasts like me. of course, i will follow all procedures stipulated, but from my previous experience in sports i know nepotism, money power and the whims of individuals play a big part.

Thats a nice list of experience.
Frankly, I have never owned a firearm and can only gauge on a person's preference based on my drool quotient :) But my only suggestion would be that ISSU Olympic grade matches are always in .22 calibre, and it is also the cheapest ammo here in India. the 32s price soar high enough to make you feel like a pilot! See if you would want to settle for a .22 instead, so that practice does not pinch much. You may also need a better than ordinary rear sight, plus a proper competition grip. Some pistols may be too heavy or long to fit into the match regulations. Of course, the above few lines are applicable only if you want to get into shooting events. Otherwise, I have seen many members come and practice with varied types of non-match handguns :)
To know more on match shooting and what is allowed or not, download the ISSU rule book from the following link:
http://www.issf-sports.org/documents//r ... ishWEB.pdf

Like in most places, KSRA too has a mix of the good, bad and ugly, not in a proportionate ratio though. But guess one can manage enough. We have a couple of good pistol shooters and you can gel well with them :) Just try not to be biased on any front, and care for your practice only. If you have your own pistol and can shoot well, there is much less what others can do to you :)
All the best...

Hi All!

Does anyone have any news on when the KSRA is reopening?

Hi Ticky.
Tentatively, the re-doing of the ranges should take another 3-4 months. Will keep you updated :)

The range is almost done and should reopen in a few weeks time. Will update when the date is finalized.
