That was an excellent initiative by Gujarat police.

Definitely an excellent initiative - letting women hold and fire those rifles should give them a lot of confidence that doing those things is not a criminal act or an intent to become a criminal.

On the downside - many of the women were seen holding the rifles wrong. This sort or training needs some follow up and a certificate and perhaps a route to gun ownership. The setting up of shooting ranges in every town is something I would like to see - just like sports stadiums or other sports facilities.

India has a double whammy against anyone who wants a weapon legally. First the police tell you to go stuff yourself 99% of the time for those who apply for a licence. And if you acquire a licence - you still have to pay something like a lakh or more to get a weapon - and in a country where the average middle class income is 5 to 7000 a month it is far easier and cheaper to acquire an illegal weapon for people with criminal intent.
