Pepper spray, at best, would buy them a few seconds. It would take a good amount on the face and eyes of the attacker for it to work. What happens when there are multiple attackers? I agree with Skyman, what about helmets?

Imagine how ANGRY the attackers would be once they realize that its not a real gun! Might as well as carry this

Dear believers of powerful co2 air pistols . I believe in what you say however self defence 101 class says never brandish a weapon unless you plan to use it. Never carry fake weapons as they will get you in more trouble than you can imagine. Never shoot unless your life is at stake and if it is shoot to kill not because it sounds cool but if the opponent is trying to kill you killing him sometimes is your only option other than running away if you can (believe me flight is a good option) but what if you can't flight away and have to fight? Now imagine you shoot him with a bb gun now he wants to stab you because he also thinks his life is at stake and to make it a really bad day what if he is packing some heat too... Self Defense with a firearm has to be a well thought of excersise.

there is a saying "use the right tools for the right job"
otherwise what we get is;

its like driving home 1 foot long pins on a ships joints with tiny hammer which is used to break ice for the G&T
