I have an 11 degree crown on one of my rifles, my only criticism (and it is a VERY small and VERY petty one!) is that it leaves a rather sharp edge at the muzzle.

Anyway, it is pretty simple to do, just set the compound rest at 11 degrees and make the cut from the inside out - I.E. from the bore to the outside of the barrel.

I am assuming you have used a lathe before as you should use a 4 jaw chuck and have the other end of the barrel where it protrudes from the headstock stabilized with a lathe spider.

338,

I will be gone all day today, but tomorrow I can take some pictures showing both the muzzle crown and also the setup on the lathe if that would help you.

Regards,

Mark

If you do a web search for "11 degree crown" you can get a lot of images and pictures as well.

hello Mark,
I have explained the gunsmith of what is required,He got the point.however there is a slight problem, the foresight on this rifle is placed on a band of about 1" in length which is a sleeve over the barrel,so the gun smith is not sure if it can be finished properly, because when one grinds the face of the muzzle there will be a gap between the sleeve and the barrel.and will be visible.so do you think it should be a problem.I am not sure if anyone else here has come across with this situation on IOF .30.06.anyways appreciate your effort my friend.Thank's. :)

:agree: , Mack The Knife and mark.

crowning is absolutely essential, i havent been to the links posted above.....but the baisc funda behind crowning is most of the available rifles are a product of mass production and unlike custom rifle manufacturers or tuning houses atention to detail cannot be mentained or rather cannot maintain due to price restraints.
coming back to the funda behind crowning.........basically the idea is to have a clean burrfree exit for the projectile at the muzzle, a genral question would arise where the hell would burr come from. in the manufacturing process while trimming the barell to its specified length after it has been rifled, it could be a perpendicular or angled cut to the axis of the barell which tends to force a bit of metal in the form of burr on to the land and grove frontal edge which is not that visible and can be evident under a magnified view. This burr tends to disrupt the flight of the bullet by causing drag and pulling the bullet in its direction.
The main aim is to get rid of this burr, it can be done simply by lapping the muzzle end with a softer metal like aluminium and a bit of lapping compound. The idea behind an angled crown is basically to protect the muzzle end from damage due to rough handeling, the sunken bore is safe and the outer muzzle edge bares the brunt hence keeping the accuracy intact.
Barell lapping, muzzle crowning, free floating the barell, beading the action are the subjects first tackled while intending on improving accuracy in case of rifles.

cheers

Can I trouble you for a picture of the muzzle with the barrel band? Either your actual rifle or one found on the net?

Apologies, but I am having trouble visualizing how the facing of the muzzle can affect the banded front, so I am probably seeing the wrong item in my minds eye!
