H&R SBBL not opening easily

My dad has a SBBL H&R 12 gauge at his place. It is very difficul to open the gun to load.

he tried oiling with some gun oil, but still you have to press the lever with your right thumb and then hit the barrel with your left hand with one karate chop and then the gun is ready for loading.

how can this be avoided, cause my dad's left hand is hurting like hell now...

You could try a karate kick or strip the gun and clean out all the gunk and gummed oil that has accumulated over the years.

Hope it's not rust.

Uh oh. Sounds like the locking bolt isn`t being retracted by the opening lever adequately. Repeatedly forcing the gun open will just cause damage. The gun needs a complete strip-down and a thorough cleaning ( including the removal of all rust ) before an assessment can be made. Use fine emery cloth ( c.400 grade ) and oil to remove the rust as the use of coarser grades will just add to the problem by causing excessive metal removal which will just exacerbate wear problems.

What if we spray WD 40.. will it be of help??

WD40 would only be a very temporary fix. The gun will have to be stripped, cleaned, lubed and put together.

Do you advice DIY or go to a gunsmith? Both me and my dad have lots of experience in DIY.....but there is a line which I donot want to cross...

The H&R is quite simple so a DIY job is reasonable to undertake.
Make sure that the screwdriver blades actually fit the screws as mashed screwheads look horrible.
Take note of which screws goes where - and which part goes where so that you have no problems with re-assembly.
Leave the WD40 alone as the very light oil will soak into the wood and promotes rot. No problem with using it when the gun is taken apart though.
Remove the barrels before you disassemble the action and make a point of cleaning up the extractor.
I presume the gun is a single barrel, exposed hammer action in the 158 Topper style ?
