Someone else will have to do Part Deux. I am into shotty refurbishment mode now. Opened up my first sidelock today (thanks Grumps) and am delighted to inform you that none of the parts went flying into Admiral Dawson's bungalow.

dear Mack The Knife this post has really helped me to scope my rifle,my first.thanx ,i had read it before but i realised how well this is done now while i scoped on my own.

i got a diana fixed 4*32 magnum plus scope and it reads that it has a glass reticle,can anybody explain what does that mean ?,is the cross etched on the glass?does it help to a stronger scope?

Do you mean, "does it help to have a better airgun rated scope"? If so, the answer is yes but it entirely depends on the recoil of your airgun.

Dear Mack The Knife,

You would obviously need a spring-piston airgun rated scope for that.

I have no idea about the intensity of the recoil on your rifle but some of the scopes you could consider are as follows:

1) Bushnell Legend series.
2) Simmons Pro Air series. Assuming you can find a good second hand example.
3) Tasco Varmint 2.5-10x42 mildot.
4) Nikko Stirling Gold Crown spring-piston series.
5) Some of the Hawke spring-piston rated scopes.

Dodger old mate, you would be appalled at how I mount a scope :
I put the mount/mounts on the rifle, put the scope in the rings, tighten up the rings enough so that the scope is held but not locked, square up the scope ( by eye ), adjust it for eye relief and tighten everthing up. Then I take the rifle to a range, zero it, make sure the scope is `square` and then take it home.
I have one of those dinky spirit levels somewhere but can`t remember the last time I used it.
I don`t even use loctite to `lock` the screws - never had one come loose.

My `giving up smoking` campaign ceased last September/October. I`ll try again this year sometime......but this time I`m going to use EVERYTHING the NHS can provide.
