Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 WA PA goes tits up.

Post by Mack The Knife » Wed Oct 11, 2006 7:11 pm

Was checking the zero this evening and after three or four shots I noticed the field of view has changed from a circle to a rugby ball shape. Never seen or heard of this happen before.

I removed the scope from the mount and on turning the quick eye focus ring, I find that the cicular FOV returns. That's great thought I but surely this shouldn't be the case. I turn the quick focus ring in and out some more and too my horror hear a crunching sound (broken glass?) and also find that the reticle is completely destroyed. Will take a pic tomorrow morning.

The scope was bought from D&R Sports Centre in August 2005, so the warranty period is over but I am wondering if Bushnell is the type of company that will help under these circumstances. If so, I will get in touch with them otherwise I will just have to accept eighty odd Dollars going down the pan. What is the advice of the U.S. based members?

Had a similar experience with a microscope using oil immersion lens and an etched slide called a counting chamber used to count various cells in blood-Tried to focus and heard this heart stopping crunch!

No, Inder, you thank me for that. Unfortunately, I don't earn a techie salary but lesson learned.

Had you not posted, the idea wouldn't have occured but you will hereby take the scope to the U.S., have it repaired and bring it back.

P.S.: It was on the '97.

Yep Mack The Knife! Thank you for that... and it won't be enough if I even say it millions times and as far as techie salary goes that's just a misconception of yours fueled by some not so true claims by some people.

Know you know the reason or would you like to conduct more experiments? ;-)

If you have something in mind Mack The Knife PM me I will bring it for you from S'pore by Jan 10 or so.

Do you want a bsa red dot? Has battery and is still showing bright red dot, problem is its for a weaver rail and its just gathering dust over here. I could get try to convince the good Dr to carry it in December, if you'd like it.

Or else tell if you want something new.

Regards,

Dev

Dev,

Any idea what scopes are available in Singapore? Would definitely like an FAC airgun rated scope.

Send that red dot via ordinary parcel post. If I like it I will buy it off you. Otherwise, I will send it back. What is the model number?

Before you send it consider buying a Weaver to dovetail adaptor for it - that's what I would - and use it on the QB. Jolly good fun!

Given the chance, I'd go for a holosight but they are a bit $$$$.

Do you have anyone coming from the U.S.? I could have a scope sent to his address so long as he/she does not mind bringing it. Pricewise, how does Singapore compare with the U.S.? Something tells me that the former may be substantially more expensive.

Thanks for the offers, much appreciated.

I failed to get the weaver to dovetail adapter which is why the generosity from my side ;-).

Okay I'll actually God willing be visiting Oz in December. But Sydney has only one gun shop that deals in everything, from ag's to powder burners. So I can probably find the scope that you want. I'll have a day in S'pore on the way back and I'll naturally meander towards a g shop.

So shall I send the red dot for the time being? Cost is the same that I paid for the crows and the spinner.

In that case please keep the red dot. I will source/find you an adaptor. Failing which I will have one machined for you at which point, I will need to borrow the red light. It's an excellent thing for the QB.

Oz is too damned expensive and the selection can be pretty piss poor unless you consider the Nightforce range which is way too expensive. If space permits get me a Light Force hand held lamp - need something that lights up the opposite bank of Forbes Sagar and give those poachers something to think about. Most probably a 170 series but will recheck the stats and let you know.

I hope you haven't sent money for the targets. They are a gift.

I know the targets are a gift but I feel that you have rewarded me with enough, so have the red dot for a while if ye want. I rather like the day of the jackal feel with the Bushnell Sportsview on the QB.
Can pick up the night source and all no problems, in checking out the night source scopes or the light. Should i try for the Bushnell Holosight? The Bushnell sportman was for some $175 aussie, I tried it on my James Maccarrie spring thunking Hume pipe rifle and it took the abuse . But if you are open to it I can pick up some Jap scope like the ones I had but they may not be the huge 3x9-32 or 40 ones. Maybe a simpler 4X25 or 4x20. They maybe of the Foremost or sharps line, I had one for years and it was switched to rimfire and airgun for years till that fraud company in Poona took it for a look and said that no point repairing it and no point sending it back either.

So choose what you want and I 'll send you the red dot for fun, pm thy address please.

Regards,

Dev

Hi Dev,

The offer is much appreciated but like you I don't see myself doing real justice to it.

If you would consider selling it I have a good friend who needs one for one his childrens rifle. Let me know what you would like for it along with full name and address and he will send you a cheque. I was pretty sure I had written your contact details in my diary but apparently not.

Whoa, hold on there! I do NOT want a Nightforce scope. I'd be in debt paying for that bloody thing and wouldn't dare use it.

A Light Force lamp, space permitting (and I do mean that) would be welcome. Will let you know exactly which model I would like at a later date.

A Holo sight like the red dot is not really needed. It's pure curiosity that makes me want one rather than need. Please don't buy one.

Now do you realise why I consider Oz prices to be on the higher side? Incidentally, if you want to buy optics from the U.S., consider Jon's site (The Optic Zone). He gives an honest opinion of the products he has in stock, has competitive prices and his service cannot be faulted. Also, unlike many U.S. based shops they accept credit cards from India.

Will think about it Dev but most probably not. Thanks all the same.

Care to name and shame, either here or via PM. I have a pretty good idea who you may be refering to though.

Gsmith &co I spent time on the phone with the young so and so and he said yup he'd repair it, send it over. Then he said that the nitrogen had leaked and there was no point. Yeah right.

We have been over these esteemed armourers to the Gods, the exclusive Dyna etc..etc...bull. Hume Pipe may not make a high end weapon but they will send you spares by VPP and perfectly kosher at that.

I just wish they put their heart into what could have been a very fine weapon. Thanks to their lag time I ended up with the IZH. Otherwise I really wanted to believe in them.

Let me know which scope that you would like I am willing to pick up a Bushnell legend or whatever you need or the lamp you need to shoot poachers with.

Heck wouldn't it be nice if there was a season on them heh heh. Oops lost my marbles again.

Regards Dev

Gsmith &co
No surprises there. He can be quite the bullshit artist. Did he ever tell you about the 250 lb draw weight cross bow he was to make for the Indian market?
or the lamp you need to shoot poachers with.
Hellooooooo....our powers stop at catching them and handing them over to the cops.

Mack The Knife,

I'm late here but I do know a very good optical engineer in Chennai who could repair your scope if nothing has broken inside. My father's business used to sell a huge quantity of binoculars and we used to custom make astronomical scopes, specialised large dia projector lenses etc and this gentleman should be able to help. I'll see if I could find his address and post it here. He does a regular job of repairing stuff for the optical engineering dept of IIT Madras and should have no problem doing your scope up - no idea about the costs though, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Cheers,

Mehul

PS Just remembered - his name is Mr Balaji and his company Opto Mech (or Opto Mac, I'm not absolutely sure about the name of the company)Engineering is located on Nelson Manickam Road in Chennai. I wonder if Rags or any of the other Chennai members would be able to check?

Hi Mehul,

Mark has come to my rescue. I will send it to him via Inder. If Bushnell quote a princely sum to repair it, I have asked Mark to bin it and that's that.

The reticle is knackered and there is a distinct crunching sound from within, which I expect to be broken glass.

Thanks for the Chennai contact. I have an old pair of Pentax zoom binocs which desperately need cleaning. Will contact Mr. Balaji if Rags feels he is not up to it. He is presently cleaning the lenses on my old Nikon.
