It may enable potential buyers of rifles chambered for obsolete or obsolescent cartridges to take the plunge if they find that some ammunition, howsoever old, is still available for the weapon of their choice, if beggars can be choosers. sorry can not be done as stock keep changing, price increasing etc

best to ask around for the latest

Hi Nagarifle,

I realize that this is a dynamic and not a static situation. What I propose is a kind of notice board and not an archive. If members have some idea of the availability and prices of imported cartridges it will help them in making better and more informed choices instead of going purely by hearsay and dealers gossip.

Many dealers try to push obsolete calibres by offering a few old cartridges with the rifle and promising more ammunition supplies in the future. Often this does not materialise and the "new" rifle owner is left high and dry. Our notice board will remedy this situation.

In any case some members do post information about availability of cartridges. My suggestion is intended to encourage this trend. It will enable far flung members to get some idea of what is available in bigger cities with bigger dealers. It will facilitate the process of asking around as one will know where and whom to ask.

Regards.

Our notice board will remedy this situation.
How can a notice board actually "remedy" a situation that has been artificially created by illegally restricting import of arms and ammunition for arms license holders?

Since arms are fundamental right under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India, that is exactly why the Section 10(1)(a) of Arms Act 1959 clearly acknowledges that an arms license holder has the right to bring into, or take out of India, arms or ammunition in reasonable quantities for his own private use.
10. Licence for import and export of arms, etc.

(1) No person shall bring into, or take out of, India by sea, land or air any arms or ammunition unless he holds in this behalf a licence issued in accordance with the provisions of this Act and the rules made thereunder:

Provided that---

(a) a person who is entitled by virtue of this Act or any other lay for the time being in force to have, or is not prohibited by this Act or such other law from having, in his possession any arms or ammunition, may without a licence in this behalf bring into, or take out of, India such arms or ammunition in reasonable quantities for his own private use;
Do we still need "notice boards" or fight for our rights to remedy the situation?

Hi,

Nothing, including notice boards, can come in the way of fighting for your rights.

It is not "your rights" but "our rights". There is a difference between the two. Of course notice boards cannot come in way of fighting for our rights but hope you appreciate the fact that surely notice boards are not a "remedy" to the situation. :)

Sanjay wrote:Shahid,

Per the present policy, any individual who holds a valid Lic returning from abroad, can bring upto

50 rounds of ammunition each year, irrespective whether the ammo is made in India or not.

The individual is allowed to bring in ammo of any Cal as long as a fire arm of that Cal is endorsed on his Lic.

No permission from any DM etc is required, you would just need to present your Lic,pay the duty etc at the

airport on arrival and perhaps be a little courteous with the staff.

Sanjay
Would like to know:

1) Can one buy 50 rounds even if his license mentioned 100 rounds per year and 25 at a time limit?
2) Does one have to declare only at the airport on arrival? What about the security check at the airport abroad?
3) Is this rule still applicable as of now?

Airlines usually require that you declare when checking in that your (checked) luggage contains ammunition, and the amount. But it is always adviseable to check with the airline about their policy beforehand.

Dear Naga,
Correct me if I am wrong. But is it not true that only people on TR other than renowned can bring in ammo from abroad? Other than these two is it possible for Indian arms licence holder returning to India to bring ammo?

50 shots can brought in by any one with a license for that cal.

ALWAYS declare arms and ammo to airline staff at the check in.

i believe one can bring on each trip 50 shots upto the max on the license.

Then Kynoch also mentioned that they had a dealer in India, Ahmad Ilahi Baksh of Moradabad. I sent an e mail, got his number, spoke with him.

A person had to be sent to Moradabad with the licence for five working days. Only 10 are sold in a day.

Not easy in India you see. Everything to make shooting sports difficult will be made.

However of late a gun dealer from Patna who was there for an IFG offline meet said Tahir Arms of Bombay import quite a few rifle calibres and ammunition for many many calibres inclusive of 7x57, 6.5x57, 6.5 x 54, 450/400 and .375 Magnum of both types was available. Prices in the circa of Rs. 400 each. Under the circumstances a better option I guess.
Hi Shahid,

Could you please pass on to me the address and telephone numbers of Ahmad Ilahi Baksh of Moradabad, the Kynoch agents in India?

Also of Tahir Arms of Mumbai.

I believe the Director General of Foreign Trade has issued a list of calibres for which cartridges may be imported. Does anyone have the list readily available?

Regards.
