I've been using old motor oil to quench my knives and it works pretty well.Will try the 5:5:2 formula on the next knife.

Is Glycrine also good for quenching???????because once i read in a book.Plz advice?

Motor oil doesn`t quench very well because it is much too thick - old motor oil turns steel a lovely shade of blue though. Any steel tempered in motor oil will be far too soft to take a proper edge. Something like Singer sewing machine oil might be OK......it needs to be very light - less than SAE 5 and more like SAE 1.
I`ve no idea what `Glycine` is but Glycol as used in antifreeze can be used in a quenching formula. Not straight though - it needs to be used in a formula with other substances. Glycerine is quite good as a wetting agent but the alcohol in antifreeze is bad news.

Saw your pics Pran cool your knife is assuming an early Bowie shape :)

The books I mentioned are :
1) How to make knives--Richard W Barney & Robert P Loveless
2) New edge of the anvil -- Jack Andrews
3) Wayne Goddard's 50$ knife Shop
4) The complete modern blacksmith---Alexander G Weygers
5) The Complete Bladesmith------Jim Hrisoulas.

I thought I would read the Hrisoulas book after making my first knife.....................Its still in shrink wrap :oops:

All books bought on Amazon.Dont know if they are available here.

Great titles.Haven't read any of them though.Have my info mostly from bladesmithing groups and forums.Mark has been very helpful too and am sure would help you if you posted your queries here.

A small query-Can a kerosene blow lamp be used to heat up the metal blanks Instead of the forge?
