US attempts to redefine switchblades

Post by m24 » Sat Jul 04, 2009 6:32 pm

Check this out!!!

U.S. ATTEMPTS TO RE-DEFINE SWITCHBLADES – WOULD MAKE MOST POCKET KNIVES ILLEGAL

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) has proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposed new rule would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its broad definition of a switchblade would also include all one-handed opening knives and could be easily interpreted to cover most other pocket knives, even simple old-fashioned slip-joints.

Please note that CBP's interpretation of the Federal Switchblade Act forms the basis for national, state and even local law and judicial rulings in many cases. This effects bof this ruling by CBP is NOT limited to just imports. This WILL affect virtually everyone who carries a pocket knife, no matter the type!

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

A very backward piece of legislation indeed... and for that matter, why even restrict switch blades? Do such restrictions really make the streets any safer?!

Cheers!

President Obama has given two public rebukes to those who would seek to restrict gun ownership since taking office: Once to a public statement made by Attorney General Eric Holder, and once to a public statement made by Sec. of State Hillary Clinton.

It has been clear so far he intends to keep his word regarding firearms rights -- he has no appetite to burn his political capital on measures that are not part of what his stated goals in office have been and are.

Regarding the pocket knife restriction, it appears that a US Senate Amendment was unanimously passed on Thursday night that protects the possession and use of pocket knives, according to one of my US Senators. The original idea was submitted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

It is clear that we in the USA have many pressing problems that we need to deal with; it is a shame that some evidently have so much time on their hands that they can afford to be trying to take our pocket knives away.
