Where to buy knives from the North East?

Post by slingshot » Thu Feb 17, 2011 11:29 pm

Hi,

I live in Mumbai and I am very interested in the fabulous knives from the North East. Especially the Dao and the beautiful knives from Mizoram and Meghalaya. I know that these indigenous knives wont be easily available. Can someone help me with information? Thank you in advance.

Hi Jonah, thank you for the heads up :). I am sorry that I missed out Nagaland. Actually, I had sent you a pm sometime ago? Did you get it?

And Rohan I might be visiting Shillong sometime in April. It might get deferred to May, and even though it might be raining, I shall make a trip. It would be good to meet you, if you are there. To me, knives are the 'highest common factor' of culture. As a tool, it is closely connected to the habitat, people and lifestyle of people.

Rajat, I still havent got any knives from the North East in my collection. Though I do have a brace of Sirupati Khukris that gladden my heart :)

And Ta-Gun, I shall definitely hop into the Handicrafts emporium.

Thank you for all your comments and responses.

Dont worry about Nagaland.. They only use cardboard swords and spears covered with silver paper thesedays.. Not to mention plastic hornbills! ROTFL Aizawl is the capital of Mizoram so you did'nt goof up actually.

I dont worry much about PM's.. They come and they go..

I dont make traditional stuff but what do you think of these??

I think that is very nice work, best wishes in your knife making. let me know if you need any books or DVDs related to blade smithing , I'm having quite a huge amount of such materials.

jonahpach, take a look at this kukri, maybe one day you will like to make something similar

Jonah, that's a very interesting looking dagger. What material is the handle made of ?

Thanks

The handles of the bowie knives are made out of Burmese Rosewood and the 'dagger' has a hollow pipe handle covered with a motorcycle grip

Hi Jonah....well...can one comment on perfection?:)....a tad speechless. Am on a fishing trip on the Kali river in Karwar, just beyond Goa so apologise for the delay in reply. No network.

Now, I really like the Bowie and the short blade that looks like a Tanto. Any chance of you being able to ship them to me? Let me know your account details and the fee. I shall have it deposited on Tuesday when I get back to civilisation. My email address is [email protected]

Thank you in advance :)
