most workshops have a sharpening wheel installed in one corner. they normally have two wheel, one rough and one smoother. runs on electricity. normally they will also have a small trough with water or coolant for tempering the just sharpened tool

my first kukhri.. got is few months back. Personal Kukhri of a 4GR jawan.
I have my doubts. He may have sold it to you but that does not mean he used a blinged up khukuri such as that in the field or even on the parade ground. Could we see a larger picture please.
now the edge has a burr on it. do you advice using a rotory sharpening wheel or use a small stick of carborundum?
Neither. Use the chakma / chakmak (steel) to straighten it out.
Also now there are slight tinges of rust coming in.
Hang your head in shame.

It's called a bench grinder.

I wouldn't sharpen a khukuri on bench grinder. The consistency is quite bad and it chews up a lot of metal. Besides, the 'dipping in cold water' that you talk about spoils the temper of the blade.
.. Any one has more knowledge of sharpening such weapons in Bangalore?
Anand, stop using 'weapon while refering to guns and knives :x

Proved yourself again... Just following with no background!!!

I know you are getting married, but still does not augment the 'follow-ship-african-ritual' .. care to check the word 'Weapon' in Dictionary.com, and the page that would result is http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/weapon which shows the Khukri as the first link, with the following explanation for the word weapon:
"any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon."

.. Still want to argue over it, go ahead...

Anand,

Has it ever occured to you that most khukuris are used as a day to day tool rather than an implement of war or self defence? You have generalised and Pran is correct in pulling you up.

By all means use a dictionary...it will spare us your malapropisms.

I agree with Mack The Knife. That khukri looks more like a tourist version rather than a military one.

... was expecting this... :)

Firstly, the above quote was from dictionary.com, which cites similar meaning from almost all dictionary publishing.

Now.. another ace card :D ...

Here is what the manufacturers of the Khukri have to say on their website

http://www.himalayan-imports.com/

A Khukuri (alternately spelled kukri, khukri, kukhri, cookri, kookeri) is the traditional knife of the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal. It is also the weapon and general-purpose tool of the Gurkhas

Now, if the manufactuers and those who have been in the business of making and authenticating this stuff calls it a weapon, I see no reason not to:)

Yaj, its not about 'that' khukri... the question is about what the meaning of a weapon is, after I posted '.. Any one has more knowledge of sharpening such weapons in Bangalore?

And since I said so, I am bravely fighting a lone syntax war against the Dancing Duo :D ...

Anand I was merely commenting on Mack The Knife's observation on the photograph posted by Diskaon. It had nothing to do with what you guys were going on about.
But now that you have asked me my opinion? I agree with Mack The Knife, to the Nepalis the khukri is an every day utility tool.It used for chopping wood, preparing food, clearing fields of weeds etc.In times of war it is a weapon.
It is a question of intent. Any object can be a weapon if the intended use is to harm or attack another person.
Since we on this forum are sporting enthusiasts we prefer to refer to the sporting/ utility uses of the objects that we love
In times of war the ploughshares shall be beaten into swords.......

TenX,

They also call it a general tool.Contrary to what many believe,a khukhri is also used for chopping and cutting wood, grass and the like.

So it is a tool when used for purposes other than for attacking/defending and a weapon when used for this.

Whom do you plan to attack with your khukhri since, for you it is a weapon:?:

.. Mostly those who beat me in this argument ;)

.. I have never said that it is not a tool... but when the manufacturers (http://www.himalayan-imports.com/ ) themselves call it as a weapon also, there is no point denying that it can be called both... :)
