My new Muela..

Had been to thane's korum mall.. Found the outlet of Basecamp traveller.. Just sneaked in to watch and get an idea of what i can get.. Some muela knives on display.. so picked this one... http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store ... s=FXKM5514

Costed me 2230.. got with a sheath.. which i can put on my belt.. Really a good knife i should say...

The price certainly has jumped in a couple of months. (won't quote the earlier price in case it upsets you ) Yes a couple of IFGians do possess this one and use it for similar rough work. Need to be careful of the plastic handle though. I was almost on the verge of buying the same piece from the same place but balked when informed of a new model to arrive by March end - which never did or I didn't get the call for it. Nonetheless, Good luck and enjoy.

Very nice indeed. Do go ahead and use it well. Unless you use it you will not know the limits of your blade. From the basic blade geometry avoid using it to pry things too much or you may end up with a broken tip. Due to its size it would be fine to use around the camp for basic chores like food prep and maybe cutting smaller branches and twigs. It certainly does not look like a chopper or to be used for 'batoning' (using another stout bit of wood as a hammer to hammer down on the spine of your knife to effectively chop a log into smaller bits)
Enjoy, respect and maintain your new knife and it will serve you well.

Can sum1 giv sum opinions and suggestions of how to sharpen the knife if at all i want to.. The shopkeeper said its laser sharpend and the sharpness will long forever.. is it so?? i dont think so...

Hey congrats, Prasenjit, the Muelas are pretty good knives! I had been to the same shop too, but finally picked up a Nieto from M Saleh, a few months back.

probably true, if you keep your knife nicely stored in your cabinet ! Any type of use will impact the metal of the edge, making it bend / warp / twist / turn / flatten (at a microscopic level). So, it might have been sharpened by lasers, by the neighborhood dhaar-wallah, by hand on a stone...... it WILL get blunt with use. There is a separate thread on sharpeners here, you can refer to that, and used to use a normal Carborundum stone, but recently purchased a Spyderco - damn expensive, but does a sweet job.

Congratulations.. prasanjit since you are in Mumbai, do go & check M.Saleh at Abdul rehman street. they sell Nieto, Muela and Cold Steel knives. The cold steel ones are expensive even considering tax, duties, profit etc.. The nieto's are very affordable and good value for money...

I know M. saleh has very good collections of knives.. But what happened is i got this when i casually went in to the Mall and ended up barging into Basecamp outlet.. saw the knife and it was just awesome.. I had saved my money for buying an Air Rifle but now that has been postponed by further 10-15 days.. will make sure i go to M. Saleh... The old man is a good person to interact with...

Prasenjit, you are a lucky charm. You find the best knives at unbelievable prices. My jaw dropped when I read what you paid for the Aitor Jungle King 1. I wont tell you what I paid. Suffice to say, I paid an arm and a leg. Lucky you!

And this Muela, the tang is a little thinner than the Muela Military Tactical. This is a wonderful knife to take camping. It has a sweet little belly is good for chopping food and meat and vegetables. And it is just right for shaving wood. I dont advise you to go whacking at big blocks of wood or batoning with this. Will do the job but it will strain the knife as it is thinner than the regular work horses. Besides, most wood required for a fire are available on the forest floor and not on trees. The handle of your knife looks like it is rubberised and not krayton. If rubberised, with a full tang, it will serve you well unlike the krayton handles that they have otherwise.

The steel of the Muela knives gets a little dull after camping. However, you dont need a carborundum stone for regular sharpening. Since the bevel is well defined, it just needs a sharpening steel to align the edge. Take it to the sharpening stone once a quarter if you are camping with it. Rest of the time the sharpening steel should do the trick. Enjoy your knife. And may you keep getting Jaw Dropping Deals

Keep this knife slightly oiled as otherwise it can get rust. Especially the saw on the back. In case it ever gets a speck of rust, just rub a raw lemon juice on the area to remove it. In case there is pitting, then use vinegar (50% vinegar & 50% water), if more serious, then dip in thinner.

Dear Slingshot..

After hearing that there are many China likes around... I started feeling that My Jungle King is a Chinese crap.. I jus wanted to go for a good knife this time so i made sure i make a good deal no matter what i have to pay... Although the Jungle King has been used heavily.. its doing its work.

the next on Card is a Khukri which i will get ordered through one of my Nepali Friend... I need a real ready to go through any condition knife.. I dont mind making my own using a leaf spring... I have certainly thought about it... But i am not able to devote the required time...

Please keep on encouraging for enhancing my Hobby.. I am all set to buy an Air Rifle by 10th of this month.. Hope everything turns out good.. *Fingers Crossed*

Today had been to Indian Arms in Abdul Rehman Street near Crawfor Market in Mumbai for buying some pellets and found the very same knife which i purchased. the next thing i did is ask the price. And Boom.. He quoted me Rs. 3000/- for the same whereas i had purchased it for Rs. 2230/- from Basecamp..

Hope beginners like me got the lesson..

Had been to M. Saleh too and got a good view of those BIG BIG Neito Bowies. They were just awesome and it made me go mad seeing it. The sheath and everything were very excellent.. Will get one shortly.. If not deficienct of Vitamin M then for sure next month..
