Diana 460 Magnum or Diana 54 Airking???

Post by highland sniper » Mon Jul 20, 2009 1:59 am

Hello guys,

I went to the dealer today to buy Diana 460 magnum or HW 97K. (I really want to buy HW 97K but they do only have HW80 at the moment). The dealer also showed me Diana 54 Airking and I'm really impressed by the recoil. But this has also confused me a bit. Does anyone have experience of using either 460 magnum or 54 airking? I've been strongly advised to get a Weihrauch but 97K is not available and I want to get a fixed barrel rifle.

Your advice is highly appreciated.

HW 80 beats the Diana in terms of quality, so go for it if you can.

Highland Sniper,

The Weihrauchs are better airguns than the Dianas. I own a 54 myself. If I were you, I would go with what Dev suggests. Not that Dianas are bad, just that Weihrauchs are better. If you have to choose between the 460 and 54, try to shoot a few pellets from each and go with whatever you are comfortable shooting with. All the best.

Prabhat and Dev,

Thank you very much for your suggestions. Weihrauchs are definitly better, no questions on that one. Just that I want to pick up a fixed barrel this time. I would definitly go for HW 97K but the dealer doesn't stock that and is not willing to commit whether they will order in near future. They have HW 80 but its a break barrel. That leaves me with 460 and 54. Since when have you owned a 54? Would be great to get your feedback. Dealer is strongly suggesting to go for 54 but I'm not sure of the ease of side lever and slightly over sized fore-end. I dont have really big hands and this is a point of consideration too. I did shoot a few pellets but other than the cocking action, i did not really feel much difference. Of course recoil is very smooth on the 54.

Would greatly appreciate your help in making a decision.

Dev: i did send you a PM as well. Appreciate your help in getting the info about DSRA and apologies if this comes unsolicited.

Hi,

i haven't commented on the 54 versus the 460 because I haven't handled either. the 54 i have read is more pleasurable to shoot due to its recoil less nature, but the caveat being that it wrecks a lot of scopes.

regards,

Sir,

I stay in Dubai.

I have used both 54 airking and 46 mag in .22 caliber, as I have imported them to india.

I dont like the 54 airking coz of weight n handling. although its lever action is better than 460.

I like 460 over the 54. as for the HW80 weiraugh is concerned it is the best airgun in the mid velocity segment.

thanks

Dear Sir:

yes the HW97 is superior in what? against the RWS 460, price, power, performance?? NOT

maybe if you said the Air Arms TX200 superior I could try to understand but not the HW97

the RWS 460 outshoots the HW97, the trigger in the 460 can reach the same level as the HW and in accuracy they are the same

I have the 460 and the TX200 and the 460 smokes the TX at 20, 40, 60 yards in .22 caliber

the Diana trigger TO5 can be imprived not like the Rekord trigger in the HW but CLOSE, real close and that is the key the barrel can be choked and that is very important

RWS 460 tuned with a Jim Maccari spring with a top hat and rear guide with an apex seal will outshoot the HW97 any day, or night and at 820 FPS

warren

and remember "it's 30% the air gun and 70% the shooter"

now that is interesting. are you comparing a bog standard rws 460 or one with maccari parts to the 97 and tx?

can you please elaborate on how the rws outshoots the tx at 20,40,60 yards.

also, is the rws comparison to a 97 between a maccari 460 and a similar tuned 97?

any pics, grouping would be welcome

Dear Sir:

lets compare them;

HW97, $600.00, .20 cal., 628-840 fps, 13-16 fpe

TX200, $570.00, .22 cal., 560-760 fps, 16-18 fpe

460, $550.00, .22 cal., 690-875 fps, 20-23 fpe

the pellets used are 10.9 gr. Hobby's all the way to .21 Kodiaks

these #'s are for a stock air rifle (untuned) but the capacity remains the same stock or tuned air rifle meaning that you cannot bring the tuned HW97 to match the 460, the 460 will always be more powerfull since it was designed to be a 20+ fpe air rifle

the TX200 is the most accurate of the 3 but a 460 tuned to be a 20 fpe will match it because you cannot raise the power of a 16-18 fpe to match the power from factory of a 20-23 fpe

the HW97 comes in .20 cal and that is why the fpe is not the same as the TX and the 460

the 460 is more versatile to tune with what you want to do with it and is cheaper than the other 2, J Maccari has the tunes for the 460 from low to high power for the 460 but not for the HW or TX, for these he only sells the "standard" ones

for those 2 (HW and TX) you would have to buy the Steve Pope kit's from England and they would still not equal the speed of the 460 in fpe or fps
