I don't think it would be safe to repair that. Imagine the potential energy the spring stores. Now imagine what would happen to a person's face/eye if the backstop of the spring were to break off when loaded! But I'm no expert, anyone else can advice?

Since you are new to airguns ,Best course will be to go to a local gunsmith in your city & get it repaired . If it is only washer replacement, it is an easy & inexpensive job

I am really curious to know about what happened to the old piston washer. I think as it was made of leather, it must have dried and then crumbled into pieces. The screw hole for inserting leather piston is usually located on the center of the top face of the piston . A new aftermarket piston seal of correct size should do the job.

Every spring/gas piston AR holds back sufficient amount of pressure even when the gun is not cocked. The pin passing through the trigger (in this case) and the entire length of the spring tube holds back the spring force, not the end cap. There is a very rare chance that solid piece of metal should break, although in some guns with more tolerance the pin tries to move out through the sides after a few shot cycles.

That's good to know, Sam. I was afraid that old and/or rusted guns may tend to break under the spring tension. I guess it's always been my fear as when I was a teen, a spring from a cheaply made toy airsoft gun broke loose through the back and hit me just above the eye. I was hurt, but luckily no stitches and I still have my sight!

You can drill a hole. Or better if you buy an entire after market piston of correct size along with matching piston seal.

There is the old piston seal , no wonder it has crumbled into bits. If you remove the old piston seal, hopefully you will be able to see a screw hole for attaching new leather piston seal.

Looking at the pictures, it seems that only a proper size leather seal and perhaps a breech washer is all that is required to make it work again.
