RE-VAMPING my SAMURAI 3G – 0.22cal

RE-VAMPING my SAMURAI 3G – 0.22cal

My tuned IHP35 0.22cal (aka Samurai 3G) is a pleasure to shoot, with predictable accuracy at 30ft giving ½” groups consistently. However, a certain turn of events led me to further experiment with it…blame it on the DIY bug!

While rummaging through my tool box I came upon a spare IHP35 piston and this triggered the following:
1. Got a groove cut on the rear end of the piston to seat a 3.5mm wide & 1.5mm thick polymer thrust bearing…
2. Had the piston sear filed to ensure a smooth trigger release…
3. Gave the entire piston - 11 micron hard nickel-chrome coating…

These 6 operations were at minimizing friction & render a near vibration free shooting experience and also to elevate efficiency levels…
1. The next step was fitting an OX Accelerator Main Spring (obtained from TW Chambers UK)
2. SS rear guide & top-hat + spacers – machined by a local lathe operator…
3. DANIL synthetic seal with adaptor from Target-Tune.
4. Replaced the breech seal with a ‘Nitrile’ ‘O’ Ring
5. Added a foam rubber “Cheek piece & Fore-end grips” added comfort while shooting.
6. Bedded the receiver on 2mm thick foam strips to absorb vibrations

After lubing the internals of the receiver, piston + spring kit with a light coat of moly, the final fitting was done - the resultant feel & performance was very satisfactory.
1. 35+lbs cocking pressure.
2. Trigger release at 1200gms = 2 ¾lbs approx.
3. Smooth & accurate firing with very short lock-time / firing cycle.

Tested with 14.2gr RWS Super H Point pellets & 15gr PRECIHOLE Rd. Head pellets.
Range 30ft approx. Hold – Sitting Knee rested – 5/8” 5 shot groups – PICS attached.

The whole exercise turned out to be an enjoyable DIY experience!!!

Have a great week-end guys :D

Dear Briha,
How many more 3G episodes are underway ??
Grand effort !!
Is the smoother movement of the piston palpable ?

Great Work done sir !! cheers
And the outcome is visible through the shot groupings you have achieved.

>Is there any noticeable diff in the performance of the rifle after cutting a slot in the piston and adding a O ring like structure to the piston ?
>If I am not wrong the seal shown there is a HW piston seal it seems. and normally HW seals need a diff adapter on the piston to fit them was a modified adapter added to the piston to make the HW seal fit in it . if done so please can you post some pics of the adapter.
> and Any good thing after adding a HW seal replacing a Apex (Diana model) piston seal

Hi Basu,

Hi Satya,
> Thanks for your appreciation!
> Yes - there is an appreciable difference in the ARs performance....
> You see the piston has a synthetic seal infront which is about 0.25mm larger that the OD of the front end of the piston, which facilitates in the seal's snug fit, which contributes to optimum compression....
> But the read end of the piston has a clearence of approx. 0.5mm to 0.75mm from the ID of the receiver ... this in a way could or may be does interfere with the piston's smooth forward movement .....
> Many tuners abroad to avoid this anomoly resort to:
1. Buttoning the piston
2. Adding on a thrust bearing to the rear end of the piston
> I took the latter step...which ensured that the piston's contact with the ID of the receiver was not metal to metal - but between metal & a synthetic surface which eliminates friction - no piston wobble....
> Result = Smooth cocking & smooth forward movement of piston when AR is fired...15% increase in fps!
> Sorry about the 'pic of the seal' - it was an oversight - you are right the image is of the seal for HW90.... The synthetic seal I used is Danil which I had obtained from Targettune last year....looks similar but its height is much smaller....
> Yes! It needs a different adapter, which was also obtained from TT...

Respected Brihaji,
Your love and dedication for your air rifles is really appreciable. We must say you have very keen observation and fine application of knowledge in modifying the air rifles to perform excellently.
thanks

Respected Brihaji,
Truly said,But I have little confusion about the groupings by your revamped samurai 3g. Which one is better and why? one with precipell round head or with RWS pellet?
Hope you will clear my confusion.
thanks

Hi targetpoint,
> First of all there's no need to get confused....
> Remember each pellet is of a different weight & construction...So as long as they group within 1/2" one should consider the task well done :D
> It's rather strange that all ARs do not perform similarly with different pellets ...many of them shoot well with a particular brand & weight of pellets.
> So its better to try different brands, weight & shape of pellets & settle for the one that shoots the best groups in one's AR.
> As for my 3 ARs they all seem to prefer the average weighted 15gr of Precipel :D
> The only other pellet that also performs equally well is the International Shot - Pointed 14gr!

just for an addition to the pellets that perform good in Indian rifles, i would like to add the following also.
> Mastershot Wadcutters seems to perform very well in almost all the rifles.
i had Both IHP 35 .22 and AK AGNI mod 500 .22, i have tried out several pellets including all varieties of Gsmith, but luckily for me both of guns were happy with Wadcutters.
Moreover the performance of Ak air rifle was very well than that of My IHP.
Just a snap of my groupings with Ak at 75 feet with Mastershot wadcutters.

Sure you can give it a try.

thank you very much.
Its not an under-lever air rifle its a break barrel only.
the barrel in the bottom is just a support or may be a show off. No idea what it was
But the rifle is an awesome piece... from all the rifles i have came across in an Indian made.
Regards.
