I use the Finnish T8 moderators on my centrefire rifles - cost is around ?200. There is a slightly better British built moderator available but it costs about ?100 more and the slight increase in performance isn`t worth the extra money.
Silencers/Moderators look to be easy enough to fabricate but require precision machining and dimensions. The T8 fits back onto the barrel for abour half it`s length and needs a rear bushing reamed to fit the barrel. The threaded part is roughly in the centre of the moderator. The screw cut on the muzzle and in the moderator has to be perfectly alligned as otherwise the moderator will be inclined......and the first bullet fired will make a shocking mess of the baffles. Because the T8 is set back onto the barrel there is no risk of levering it if the moderator should catch a branch or something.
Mack The Knife, you`d be surprised just how much difference an effective moderator makes to the noise produced. There is still the sonic `crack` from the bullet but the majority of the noise comes from the muzzle and suppressing that by 30dB ( or slightly less ) makes a phenomenal difference. An effective moderator has other benefits as well - recoil is reduced and accuracy invariable improved - partly due to the extra weight at the muzzle but mostly because the turbulence at the muzzle is drastically reduced and slowed.
