Used to have a 12 gauge Ithaca pump that ejected downwards. I am told I used to look ridiculous trying to fire and tap dance all at once :D
Seriously, there's nothing wrong with downwards ejecting sporting guns, although I'd wonder at the implications of this in military weapons - like when firing on the move and trampling slippery shell casings underfoot.

It'd be best if it were down and sideways, or down and front. If you're part of a team, shooting and moving forward- someone's going to be stepping on casings (however they are ejected) anyway.
