New License

Hi folks. I got my license for a rifle yesterday after a two year struggle. I have the option of getting the .22 which was in my late father's name back or go in for a 30.06.

I have a question for the gurus. How bad is the recoil of a 30.06 compared to that of a double barrel gun?. I have used a 12 bore before and I think its okay.

Thanks in advance.

If you have got the license under the family heirloom category then you may have to get your fathers gun released (but I am not sure).
The recoil of a 30.06 is definitely more than a 12 bore gun but the down side is that it being a very powerful gun there are not many ranges where you can fire it safely. Besides the ammo is also very expensive.

Firstly congratulations on getting the license. Well in my opinion .22 rifle is the ideal weapon to have.

I got the .22. Happy to have it back. Yes I will certainly shoot more than with a 30.06. A properly aimed .22 should be effective for defensive purposes . Here everyone thinks the bigger bores are the only ones to go for.

Is the Eley cartridge a tremendous improvement over the iof one?.They are asking 110.00 for them.

Rs 110 seems expensive. Where are you based.
In Gurgaon I get them for Rs 55 each and the IOF for Rs 20

Hello,

Eley or KF.. unless you're planning to participate in competitions, and are finicky about getting pin point accuracy, assuming you as the shooter and you gun are both are capable of it, its irrelevant which ammo you use.

if you just want to have fun, shoot it off sometimes.. or even regularly... KF is just fine.. quantity trumps quality in this particular case !! i haven't had any issues with either eley or kf.. so both more or less equal for me at this point.

just my opinion...

I am based in Patna. For the iof they are quoting 40 bucks. Terrible.

The iof gets stuck at times, which is why I was looking at eley.

Hi Atul. Where do buy these Eley's from? Open market or a club?

Club is the best place to buy ammo. I get ₹30 on Eley & ₹13 on the KF. From my Club. :)

I should think so but it would be better to ask somebody in the arms section of your local administration. If I remember correctly MHA ciculars specifically allow for grandchildren. Its here somewhere in our forum itself. Pl look it up.
