The .30-06 is the more powerful cartridge by about 10%. Both carry farther than you'd be able to see, much less hit anything.

As to "effective range", you first must define what you mean by that term; to what purpose you wish to put the rifle. Effective range is purely a military term, with each military having their own criteria, including complete penetration of the most likely opponent's helmet, and nowadays body armor, and the range at which the average soldier is likely to hit a man-sized target with the issue rifle and ball round.

I have purchased the IOF 30-06 rifle and obtained a Vortex Diamondback scope for the rifle. But just cannot figure out how to mount it. The dovetail provided has no recoil pin holes in it. I'm sure a scope wouldn't maintain position after a couple of shots. The holes provided for the weaver bases to attach a weaver mount seems to be of some weird specification as the allen bolts normally used do not fit. I have a warne base for a Sauer 202 (on which the IOF rifle is patterned) and the bolts provided do not fit the holes on the IOF receiver. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Here's a response I had posted a couple of pages back. You could alternatively get the holes drilled and tapped to 4mm.

I have purchased the IOF 30-06 rifle and its excellent for the price you pay. Only drawback is that it is light and therefore has a considerable recoil, which may be kept in mind if you are a first time buyer. Regards

Yes, a heavier barrel could be installed. Your closest gun store can tell you the cost to own one.

How can the weight be increased while maintaining the balance? The recoil needs to dumbed down.

A heavier barrel would not be appropriate as the cost of machining and rifling would be prohibitive. You could possibly increase the weight by having a stock made out of denser wood like sheesham or teak. But the best way to reduce recoil would be to invest in a quality recoil pad, use ammunition of lesser grains if you could find it and hold the rifle properly against the shoulder.

Actually, since the IOF rifle has the locking shoulders in the barrel itself, rather than the receiver, this would be near impossible. Though not in India, rifled barrels blanks are available, in all contours and shapes. So are muzzle brakes to reduce recoil, far more than a heavier barrel would. If you really want more weight, while maintaing the rifle's balance, the barrel can have a weight sleeved to the outside; and the butt stock can be bored out under the butt plate and lead weights added.

Can anyone help in procuring the sauer type long base that will fit the factory drilled holes in IOF 30-06 Rifle. Is there an Indian alternative?

The felt recoil can be reduced substantially by getting a new stock made, where the drop to heel isn't as pronounced as the factory standard stock.

That said, I haven't found the standard factory stock to be unpleasant to shoot.

What are you comparing it with? A 22 rimfire or an airgun?!

Gun accessory, Amritsar has a folding butt stock for IOF 30-06 rifle, on its website. Has anybody bought and fitted it to their 30-06 iof rifle. Please post your opinion and experience.
