Founded in 1939 as Forjas Taurus in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Taurus began as a tool and die manufacturer. It entered the firearms market in 1941 with its first revolver, the Model 38101SO. Over the decades, Taurus expanded its portfolio to include steel-frame pistols, polymer-frame pistols, revolvers, and law enforcement weapons, primarily for the Brazilian market. The company established Taurus International Manufacturing Inc. (Taurus USA) in 1982 to better penetrate the U.S. market, later moving its U.S. facilities to Bainbridge, Georgia, in 2019 (Taurus USA History).
Associations with Smith & Wesson, Beretta, Rossi firearms USA & Sellier & Bellot (Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos)
Taurus’s design and manufacturing capabilities were significantly shaped by its relationships with Smith & Wesson and Beretta:
Smith & Wesson (1971–1977): In 1971, Bangor Punta Corporation, then the parent company of Smith & Wesson, acquired a 54% stake in Taurus. This ownership facilitated the exchange of design and manufacturing knowledge, influencing Taurus’s early revolver designs, which closely resembled Smith & Wesson models. The partnership ended in 1977 when Taurus was sold to its current owners, severing direct ties.
Beretta (1980): In 1980, Taurus purchased Beretta’s São Paulo manufacturing plant after Beretta completed its contracts with the Brazilian military. This acquisition included tooling, technical drawings, and workforce, enabling Taurus to produce pistols like the PT92, a variant of the Beretta 92 with an ambidextrous frame safety. This move marked Taurus’s entry into semi-automatic pistols, incorporating Italian design elements into its portfolio.
Rossi Revolvers: In 1997, Taurus acquired the rights to manufacture revolvers under the Rossi brand, expanding its revolver portfolio. Rossi revolvers, produced in São Leopoldo, Brazil, include models like the .38 Special and .357 Magnum, complementing Taurus’s own revolver lineup.
Sellier & Bellot : Since 2015, Taurus has been majority-owned by Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos (CBC), which acquired 52.67% of its shares following approval by Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE).CBC, a leading global ammunition manufacturer,
also owns Sellier & Bellot, a Czech company acquired in 2009, and MEN, acquired in 2007. This ownership structure connects Taurus to a broader network of ammunition expertise, enhancing its ability to integrate advanced ammunition technology into its firearms
Taurus’s historical associations with Smith & Wesson, Beretta, and its ownership by CBC, which includes Sellier & Bellot, enhance its credibility and technological capabilities. By aligning with the 'Make in India' initiative, JD Taurus is poised to transform India’s small arms landscape.
