Gentlemen,
Could you shed some light on the subject as to why a .22 LR pistol commands a much higher price than a comparable pistol chambered in .25 ACP in our country ?
(A friend pm ed me this question and after his due permission I am posting it here for your comments).

Quite elementary Doc......25 ACP ammo is pretty expensive compared to .22 LR ammo.

Pretty expensive? How much is the difference between the price of imported .22lr and .25 acp ammo in your city ? The question has been asked in context of prevailing price in India.marksman wrote:Quite elementary Doc......25 ACP ammo is pretty expensive compared to .22 LR ammo.

.25 ACP ammo is about 2x .22LR in Europe... so it probably is a lot more in India.

I beg to differ Sir.MoA wrote:.25 ACP ammo is about 2x .22LR in Europe... so it probably is a lot more in India.
As I mentioned earlier too we are talking about the price of the ammo and the said firearms in India and not in Europe or the USA.
The price of a .25 acp bullet is around Rs.25-30 in my neck of woods. Since .25 acp bullet is not manufactured in India , only imported stuff is available.

You read the price for KF made .22lr Sir !!!MoA wrote:RP which is still twice that of .22 from what I have read..
The imported .22lr ammo and the .25 acp ammo cost about same here in Punjab for a civilian . The competition shooters do get the imported .22lr ammo at cheaper rates though.
Is the price of .25 acp and imported .22lr comparable over there ?doctor wrote:here in mumbai the price of 0.25 ammo starts from rs 45/ round

Re: Price of .22lr pistol vs .25 acp
Tech. Specification of .22 LR :
Muzzle Velocities: from 1050 to 1435 ft/sec
Muzzle Energies: from 98 to 191 ft-lb
Bullet Weights: from 32 to 40 gr
Cartridge Length: 0.975 in
Case Length: 0.600 in
Case Diameter: 0.226 in
Bullet Diameter: 0.223 in
Tech. Specification of .25 ACP
Muzzle Velocities: from 750 to 900 ft/sec
Muzzle Energies: from 62 to 73 ft-lb
Bullet Weights: from 35 to 50 gr
Cartridge Length: 0.910 in
Case Length: 0.615 in
Case Diameter: 0.278 in
Bullet Diameter: 0.251 in
Look at the data, it speaks that .22LR is far better than .25 ACP when it comes to Muzzle velocity and energy delivered on the target. If I were to choose between these two, I would definitely go for .22 LR. Prices are directly proportional to the demand. More demand means more expensive the product is.

Tingriman,
What is the length of the barrel's from which data was obtained for the .22lr and the .25 ACP.From what I have seen, typically the .22 data is from a rifle barrel and .25 data from a 3-4" pistol barrel. With comparable barrel lengths, the variation may not be that much. Also,a .25 pistol will be less prone to jams than a .22 pistol.
Doc,
From where do you get such cheap .25 ammo.? Is it fresh ammo?

tingriman,
Winnie is right. The ballistics of both these caliber bullets are comparable if shot through a 2-3 inch barrel. .25 acp being a semi-rimmed bullet feeds better, also it is a center fire ammo.
winnie_the_pooh,
This price was quoted to me by a dealer in Amritsar on Sunday evening . By the way all dealers call their ammo stock "fresh" !! I did not see it personally.

Doc, you are right, but the look at the comparision of beretta 21 bobcat in both the calibres (.22 LR and .25 ACP, with identical barrel length) suggests more or less the same. May observe the power factor histogram, the histogram of .22 LR has higher value than .25 ACP.winnie_the_pooh wrote:What is the length of the barrel's from which data was obtained for the .22lr and the .25 ACP.From what I have seen, typically the .22 data is from a rifle barrel and .25 data from a 3-4" pistol barrel. With comparable barrel lengths, the variation may not be that much.

tingriman,
Thanks for the link. The ME, MV and the power factor seem to be higher in .22lr fired from a 2.4 inch barrel. Hell, even the recoil is higher in .22lr in this particular comparison study .

Welcome Doc,
But as you said, the feeding may be a problem with .22 LR though.
