what all differences are btwn .357sig and .357S&W

Post by Ash » Sat May 04, 2013 11:41 am

Hi, guys
Can you people please tell what all differences are there in 357sig and 357s&w calibers? Like the size of the bullet the power etc. And also if you people can put some light as in which is a better pistol among them for edc?
Thanks
Ash

.357 S&W Mag is a revolver (rimmed) cartridge, while the .375 SIG is a pistol (Rimless) cartridge.

The .357 Mag is probably more powerful between the two.

Ash,

The Wiki articles Kandarp posted are very educative. The .357 SIG is a necked down .40 cartridge to provide .357 mag performance in a semi-auto pistol. It also allows for more magazine capacity as a pistol can accommodate a larger capacity magazine. The performance of the two cartridges is nearly identical.

Having said that, the ammo availability is a huge issue. You may find it virtually impossible to get hold of the .357 SIG ammo, unlike the .357 mag.

I agree there. A dealer in Kanpur said that he could arrange for 5 - 10 rounds of .357 Sig for 5000 a pop! (yes, that's 3 zeroes)

Hi, thanks for showing interest guys.
But aren't there pistols for 357 s&w rounds then what is the need for necked down version of 40 and a lesser powerful 357sw?
As both can be fired in a pistol. I do understand the fact that a necked down version would have faster rate of fire but still one could go for a 9mm pistol insrtead going for a ammo which is costlier and ALMOST equally powerful
Thanks

You got quite a few things there.

The .357 S&W Magnum is a rimmed cartridge meant to be used in revolvers, useable in semis but not ideal. Also it is a lot longer than the SIG, which makes the grip lot larger which is less ideal for people with smaller hands.

Which 9mm are you talking about? Both the .357s are 9mms; the S&W is 9x33mmR! The 9X19 NATO is not as powerful as the .357s. 9X19 124gr bullet makes 382 ft·lbf against the 125 gr .357 S&W's 710 ft·lbf.

The .357 Sig was created in an attempt to duplicate the ballistic performance of the 357 S&W Magnum cartridge (out of a 4 inch revolver). Keep in mind that this is only true for the 125 grain bullet. The .357 Mag can handle a much wider variety of bullet weights than the .357 Sig.

If you already have a firearm chambered in .357 Magnum, just wondering what would be the rationale for acquiring a .357 Sig, especially since ammo will be as rare as hen's teeth.

Thanks vikram and XL_target as far as ammo for 357sw I use 140gr and 180gr buffalo rounds as it is very powerful and good for edc weapons. The sole reason to get a 357 pistol for me is high capacity magzine faster rate of fire and convenience of carrying a pistol as my Smith is 4inch mod 66 wid a square butt and becomes quite visible no matter how much I try to hide it and sometimes it becomes embarrassing at certain places. In fact I prefer to carry my wifes cz83 .380cal which is very convinient. Yes it also gives me a sense of pride of having a 357sig in india I thnk friends you can understand it..

Hi, winnie what a coincidence was doing the same thing and saw your reply at the same time lol. But rest assured all my families guns are from legitimate sources and shops and infact I go into lot of minute details like getting all details and markings on the firearm if any, previous owners license copy and the source of the weapon and a legitimate bill which specifies the make the bore etc.

What brand of pistol are you proposing to get in .357 SIG?
