Re: Different Models of Beretta .32 Pistol
Beretta .32 pistols are mainly available in four commercially produced models.
1) Model 1934 - The oldest among commercially successful model and found in maximum quantity in Indian market since they were all imported before the ban on import. All components except butt plates are made of steel. Even the butt plates have steel liners. These are very reliable and sturdy weapons with single action trigger. Magazine release is at the base of the butt. There is an even older model which looks similar but with somewhat straighter grip. It is the Model 1931 with 8 shot magazine and 3.5 inch barrel. I have seen some of these in the past but must be rare now.
2) Model 70 - Imported in fairly large quantity but not as much as Model 1934, hence more expensive. This is single action too but with repositioned safety, half cock hammer safety and a very effective slide stop and last shot hold open mechanism. The large magazine release button with serrations is on the left butt plate towards the base and it is possible to release with right thumb if one has large fingers. ( I do it myself since I have one ). Swapping magazine is a breeze. The pistol is a beauty as far as design goes. The dis-assembly lever is on the right frame above the trigger guard.
3) Model 82 / 81 FS - A good double action pistol in both 8 (Mod 82) and 12 (Model 81) round models but with alloy body. The 13 round models should be difficult to find and frightfully expensive in India. Overall a very good pistol with all modern features. The dis-assembly lever is on the right of the frame but behind the trigger and it somewhat hides the exposed trigger transfer bar. (A fully exposed trigger transfer bar is a feature some experts believe is a shortcoming in the 9mm Model 92 FS used by the US Army. But that's not important here). Oh ! almost forgot.. FS means the front of the trigger guard is checkered and curved inside for a better two handed grip.
4) Beretta Model 90 - This again is a marvel in design and virtually the double action avatar of Model 70 but with magazine release button (though not serrated like the 70) located on the left just behind the trigger guard. Mod 90 is made of steel with plastic butt plates where P.Beretta and the logo is inscribed in bold. Rarely found in India, Model 90 should be a prize should you get one. The model had a stainless steel barrel. It was introduced in 1969 and dropped in 1982.
All the models mentioned above have 3.3 to 3.5 inch barrels... Model 70 also had a 6 inch barrel version which goes by the name Model 70 T.
5) Model 3032 Tomcat - The most compact .32 Beretta with a short 2.4 inch barrel, alloy body and with black or brown plastic butt plates. The double action trigger is smooth, trigger guard is large, easy to grip. The magazine release button is again like Model 70, on the left butt plate and serrated for positive finger grip. The most salient feature of the weapon is the patented tip-up barrel which allows the barrel to come off the frame by about one inch once you press the lever above the left trigger guard. This allows quick loading and unloading directly in the chamber and off course cleaning on the field.
Hope this helps you.
