Picked up a new toy...

Post by MoA » Wed Feb 25, 2009 1:51 am

Mossberg Maverick with a rifled barrel. Was pleasently surprised to see that slugs can reach out and touch at 100+ meters... :)

Moa,

Nice toy you picked up.Which slugs did you shoot?Surprisingly a no. of Mossberg pump action shotguns that made their way to India have a rifled barrel or come as a set with a smooth and a spare rifled barrel.

A nice shotgun scope and a sling would complete the rig.No sling swivels?

That's a fine pump MoA. A real joy to shoot with. Congratulations.

I would request if anyone can tell what difference the smooth barrel and rifled barrel make in 12 bore shot gun? I know why rifle is rifled, but do not know the ballistic difference/advantage it gives in shot gun.

Shotguns are smooth bore, because they are meant to shoot "shot", however in some areas there are hunting restrictions on the use of rifles - enter the rifled barrel shotguns.

They have whole or part of the barrel rifled and are used with slugs, the rifling is used for the same reason that it is used in conventional rifles - to impart a spin to the slug and thus improve range and accuracy. Some shotguns also allow for an easy swap between smooth bore & rifled barrels, thus offering the owner more flexibility when out hunting - you can have two guns at essentially the price of one gun.

Slugs meant to be shot in rifled barrel shotguns should not be shot through choked barrel smoothbore guns.

Cheers!
