BUDDHADEB GUHA'S GUN

Post by ASIF007 » Sat Sep 28, 2019 12:00 pm

I recently came across Buddhadeb Guha's famous 12 bore WW Greener Gun. In case people who are not aware of Buddhadeb Guha , he is in his mid 80's and was a reputed shikari in the 1950s and 1960s and one the most popular Bengali authors today.

Some of my observations was it was still well maintained, 32 inch barrel, 3 inch Chamber had selective ejectors , engravings were OK however I felt the Gun was not very lightweight. What were the standard weight of 12 bore Shotgun of WW Greener? Sorry the owner did not allow me to take pictures.

Regards
Asif

Most likely is a wild-fowler. Hence the weight.

I happened to watch a video interview of Mr.Guha where he expressed his love for this gun as he never missed any shot.

32 Inch Barrel is too long, in today's time for India.
As Vikram rightly pointed out,
This is good for Wild Fowl, Primarily Water (Fowl).
I use to own a 30 Inch Westley Richards.
I sold it and brought a 28 Inch Bernardelli.
It is light and very easy to swing for a quick shot.
Very practical, simple and easy to use.
The Guns which belong to these Old Shooters (Shikari),
Are generally extensively used.
Check the Firing Pin and
The Chamber (externally) where it sits.
(I mean the Breech).
(specially the right one - for right handed).
You will clearly notice the wear from use.
Again Ejectors on the 12 Bore, in India,
is of very little practical use,
(unless for professional shooters)
But it definitely feels good.
These are entirely my personal views.
Most of us Gun owners, are in it for the Passion,
Practicality may have little role to play.
(Specially in the Indian Gun scenario).
Just sharing my little experience and knowledge.
I may be completely wrong.

Jr.

Sir what could be the ideal weight of a lightweight Side by Side 12 bore and a heavier Wild-fowler Gun?

Yes I met him recently and he still fondly remembers this WW Greener and has written about it extensively in his books.
