B******* Betty retires

Post by xl_target » Tue Mar 15, 2016 2:11 am

The in-cockpit voice of the US Navy's F-18's belongs to a real human.
This woman is affectionately called "Betty", along with another not so affectionate name :)

In this Boeing produced video, she is being wished good bye.
It is interesting to see the woman behind the voice.

Interesting, always thought that those type of voice alerts were computer generated - never realised that there was a real person doing a voice over recording for the alerts!

Wonder who gets to do these for the LCA? An Israeli (since they supply the avionics) or an Indian?

Cheers!

Out of a total of 35 major avionics components and line-replaceable units (LRUs), only three involve foreign systems. These are the multi-function displays (MFDs) by Sextant (France) and Elbit (Israel),[25] the helmet-mounted display and sight (HMDS) cueing system by Elbit,[25] and the laser pod supplied by Rafael (Israel).[26] Production aircraft are expected to have MFDs from Indian suppliers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HAL_Tejas

The relaxed static stability (RSS) was an ambitious requirement. In 1988, Dassault had offered an analogue flight control system (FCS), but the ADA recognised that digital FCSs would supplant it.[22] First flying in 1974, the General Dynamics F-16 was the first production aircraft designed to be slightly aerodynamically unstable to improve manoeuvrability. Many aircraft have positive static stability to induce them to return to a straight, level flight attitude when the controls are released, maneuverability is reduced as the inherent stability has to be overcome. Aircraft with negative stability are designed to deviate from controlled flight and thus be more manoeuvrable.[30][31]

In 1992, the LCA National Control Law (CLAW) team was set up by the National Aeronautics Laboratory to develop India's own state of the art fly-by-wire FCS for the Tejas.[32][33] In 1998, Lockheed Martin's involvement was terminated due to a US embargo in response to India's second nuclear tests in May of that year. The CLAW team's scientists and mathematicians were successful in developing their control laws ,The NAL's CLAW team completed integration of the flight control laws by themselves, with the FCS software performing flawlessly for over 50 hours of pilot testing on TD-1, resulting in the aircraft being cleared for flight in early 2001. The automatic flight control system (AFCS) has been praised by all test pilots, one of whom remarked that he found the LCA easier to take off in than in a Mirage 2000.[41]

Of the five critical technologies the ADA identified at the programme's onset as required to design and build a new fighter, two have been entirely successful: the development and manufacture of carbon-fibre composite (CFC) structures and skins, and a modern glass cockpit. ADA has a profitable commercial spin-off in its Autolay integrated automated software for designing 3-D laminated composite elements (which has been licensed to both Airbus and Infosys).[22] By 2008, 70% of the LCA's components were being manufactured in India, the dependence on imported components was stated to be progressively reduced over time.

http://www.tejas.gov.in/technology/open ... onics.html

Tejas is equipped with a inhouse quadruplex digital fly-by-wire flight control system to ease handling by the pilot.
Open Architecture Computer (OAC) designed and developed by ADA, combines the functions of earlier mission computer, display processor, video switching unit, mission preparation and retrieval unit. It is designed based on open system interfaces standards, which provides interoperability, scalability, and portability. OAC drives three multi-function displays, HUD and the helmet-mounted display. This open architecture design will allow the designers to continuously adapt and upgrade Tejas to meet the challenges of modern warfare.

The Uttam AESA radar is going very well and will feature in Tejas Mark II replacing the Israeli AESA even on the Mark I configuration .The Tejas is an excellent aircraft and has established the Defense Industrial ecosystem for aviation industry much to the chargin of the import lobbies and 'Couptas' of the Indian media .

I had thought too that these are computer generated voice overs. Very interesting indeed...

Ain't it easier to say "pull up" & put into a computer than write code for to do it & debug, then alpha, beta, patch... ;)

I think it is hard to get the proper intonation and urgency into a computer generated voice. As main says, it's probably easier to use a human voice. Keep in mind that the FA-18 design started quite a few years ago and systems design was not what it is today.

There is another woman on YouTube who claims that her voice was used in a lot of civilian airliners.
However, her voice sounds really robotic.

Probably you have no clue about the risk from Mossad. Mossad is well known for deception. Wherever you are reading "Israel" read it as "Mossad". Israel is a significant "partner" in various defense and security matters with India. Just search the internet for "deception Mossad".

About ten years ago while traveling in a train had a chat with an ex serviceman from Himachal Pradesh. As per him there are lot of Israelis living in and around Dharamsala. Asked him what work they do? As per him most of them are into selling drugs and underworld activities. Now you can use your imagination and wisdom.

Although I agree to a lot of your arguments but I completely disagree to your points here.I am a techie and all I am interested in is technology and only thing I care for is facts not hearsay .By this logic there are Russian mafia in Goa ,that makes Russians undependable ?What about the Americans who sabotaged the Indian cryogenic program in early 90's using CIA and some local help to implicate the key scientist (Nambi Narayanan and D Sasikumaran -- both working on the cryogenic technology)driving the programs in bogus scandals ,setting it back by 20 years with active support from the regime in kerela ?

http://www.rediff.com/news/column/who-k ... 131118.htm

At this rate of paranoia we wont have any friends left .We have to be vigilant but not paranoid

And the point I was trying to put across was that Tejas is a very well designed and executed 4+ generation aircraft with very high degree of Indigenization .This has single handedly created vast highend ecosystem of aircraft design and ancillary manufacturing in India .The Israeli BVR missile will be replaced with the Indigenous BVR Astra 1 which is succesfull and and followed up with Astra II .The Israeli origin AESA radar will be rplace with the Uttam AESA whose trials have been very successfull and is on course .Avionics have negligible foreign influence and weaponisation is also progressively Indigenised .

India has developed a fourth-generation fighter from scratch, one that uses several critical technologies and subsystems that have been developed in-house on a shoestring budget. The LCA’s mission computers, electronic warfare systems, man machine interface, flight control systems, composite airframe technology—these have been developed in India and are all flying on multiple IAF aircraft today in the form of upgrades. The MiG-21 Bison, the MiG-27 Upgrade, the Jaguar Darin III—they all source several local subsystems and components developed by Indian entities. The Sukhoi Su-30MKI, which Indian aviation enthusiasts venerate more than any other fighter, owes much of its success to the DRDO-run Project Vetrivale, which was possible only because of the sweat and toil that went into the LCA programme. In the process, the nation has developed a respectable system of specialised companies and suppliers that can contribute to future projects. Astra Microwave, Data Patterns, and Samtel are just a few examples of companies that cut their teeth on the LCA and now offer world-class aerospace components, subsystems and services.

This in the face of malafide unsubstantiated and vicious criticism of the program in the media with generous help from the import lobby crooks .There is a entire brigade with omnious help from the earlier regime .

Following is an example as a anonymous rueters feed on Hindustan times to alter public opinion
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india/mod ... Oz5nK.html

These thugs are thoroughly exposed now .As soon as the tejas program is proved successfull now there is a entire international lobby trying to dump 4rth gen aircraft in India dirt cheap .

The only issue is a low bypass turbofan engine .The Kaveri was a valuable experience and it is going to fit the Rustam II UCAV (combat drone ) and the experience will prove invaluable for the development of next gen jet engines Indias next gen 5th gen AMCA project which has completed the design phase .Till then GE 404 for the mark 1 and 414 for the mark II.

Look at what some of India's defence reporters have to say on Tejas :

Persistent allegations about the Tejas' performance shortfalls are now being exposed (Ajay Shukla )

Of course disagreement and dissent is part and parcel of any healthy discussion and leads to clarity of thoughts. I fully respect it.

Technology that is not transparent or open source might have many shortcomings or back doors. It is a well known fact and not hearsay. Remember when some Chinese firms were blacklisted, it was suspected that they are supplying telecommunication equipment with back doors.

It is not a question of particular mafia, in a particular part of country but question of how intelligence agencies usually work. It is well known fact that they use mafia and drug running not only to fund their operations but also do espionage. It is a well known fact and not hearsay. The art of super deception of Mossad is well known fact and not hearsay.

Remember East India Company came to Indian subcontinent as "friend". As they say rest is history. It is a fact and not hearsay. A well known politician had said more than a century ago that he destroys his enemies by becoming their friends.

These are the only points I am trying to convey.

You mean to say that the lady sitting inside the rear sensor of my car, as well as the lady in my cellphone who says "in 200 meters, turn right" or something similar, are for real?? hey, I gotta take my phone apart to find the lady. Must be really tiny, though!
Cheers!

Usually they have various sound files that contain chunks of prerecorded voice samples. They are played in particular sequence depending on the logic coded in the software. Example there are files containing following recorded voices -

"in 100 meters"
"in 200 meters"
"in 300 meters"
"turn left"
"turn right"
"go straight"

If the code wants you to go 300 meters and turn left, it will sequentially play the voice files "in 300 meters" "turn left"

Real problem with these kind of gadgets is if they have a backdoor or a bug in the logic of source code, they can be remote controlled or made to transmit data from your device. For example many modern smart phones can be used as a surveillance device(without you ever realizing it). Your phone microphone can be used to record all conversations in the room. Your phone camera can record what you are doing. Similarly your GPS co ordinates can be recorded. Everything can be stored or transmitted either periodically or real time. It can be coded or hacked in a manner that even when you have turned your phone off, actually it may be on and only showing a shutdown screensaver then turning off only the display.

Yeah, I know! Why else would Google have such gigantic servers under high security?

On one of my old GPS devices, I had the voice of Karl from Slingblade.
If you didn't turn when he told you to he would start threatening to do bad stuff to you. :)

Whenever I return to IFG after a hiatus I look for a thread by XL. And, there's always something to learn.

XL, I had no idea there's a human behind the voice. Thanks again for another lovely post

Cheers
