Indian Shooting League

Post by Safarigent » Thu Aug 08, 2013 8:14 pm

India to get its own shooting leage:

BANGALORE: The growing popularity of shooting in the country, which began to catch eyeballs through the stellar performance of RVS Rathore, Samaresh Jung and Abhinav Bindra, may culminate in a professional shooting league soon.

Conceptualized by shooter-cum-entrepreneur Shimon Sharif, the Indian Shooting League (ISL), tipped to be a mix of some of the world's best talent and set to be the richest global event in the sport, is set to begin in New Delhi within a few months.

According to Sharif, the League, high on glamour quotient, will be specially designed to make it more spectator friendly. "Unlike other leagues around the world we are not following the player bidding system.

Any team with five shooters can get registered for the league. They also have the liberty to name their own team. The league will give a good opportunity to international gun companies and all other brands associated with shooting to field their own teams," Sharif told TOI.

"Shooting academies, rifle clubs, schools, colleges and universities can also participate. Every team can strike professional deals directly with the shooters," he added.

Sharif said he has already discussed the league with some of the world's best shooters including London Olympics bronze medalist Gagan Narang and 2010 World Championship gold medalist and world record holder in 10m air rifle Peter Sidi of Hungary.

On a side note, did anyone read this piece of news:

7 Aug 2013. India's medal prospects will take a major hit as three events have not been included in the 2014 Games in Glasgow. The organisers have also dropped the pairs-event which gave Indian shooters a major share of the medals.

In 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, Indian shooters bagged 14 gold, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals on the Dr. Karni Singh shooting ranges. Shooting proved the biggest contributors to India breaching the 100-medal mark to finish second behind Australia in the overal medal standings. But of those shooting medals, 7 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals came in pairs events.

The three shooting events - standard pistol, centre fire pistol and women's prone - have not been included.

India is expected to approach the organisers of the 2014 CWG over the selection of sport disciplines. The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jitendra Singh is expected to raise the matter with the concerned authorities after it was brought to his notice that India's medal prospects will take a hit since several disciplines in which the country has historically done well have not been included for the Games.

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has also raised the issue with the Commonwealth Shooting Federation (CWSF).

Suprisingly the hosts have kept the not so popular big bore rifle events and opted to drop these three Asian Games events.
