Cop severely injured by negligent discharge of own firearm

If they aren't even capable of safely handling a firearm, what hope do citizens have of them coming to their rescue? Someone should tell this reporter the difference between a misfire and negligent/ accidental discharge!

Cop misfires gun outside South Mumbai five-star hotel

A constable attached to the Colaba police station was severely injured, after he misfired a round from his service revolver, outside Hotel Taj Mahal near Gateway of India.
According to an eyewitness, the sound of gunfire created panic, a the 26/11 terror attacks are still in the minds of people, but the situation was brought under control in few minutes.
The incident took place on Tuesday around 8.45 am. Mumbai is always on alert and the hotel and its surrounding area has 24X7 police patrolling.
A constable was checking his weapon in one of the patrolling vehicles, and suddenly it fired, injuring his palm severely.
Sources said that the injured constable was taken to St George Hospital. Colaba police have taken serious note of the incident and are investigating the matter.

Rather than knowing to how to handle firearms, it is well known what the cops are actually interested in. Do not want to comment on a public forum because matters are already well known.

Now the question is will the cop face any charges for accidental/careless discharge of firearm within the city limits, or the there will be no case among brethren

most probably he will face a departmental inquiry and after the inquiry a fsl report of the weapon will be attached with it and go in files. there is very less chance that police will register any case for above mentioned incident against a on duty cop. ( one major reason which i have learned from one of my friend now working as asst. director level at fsl that in this type of cases it generally reveled the poor maintenance of police and defense weapons come to surface)

As per the latest report it seems like it was a Glock pistol. Poor training seems the most likely cause.

Constable injured after pistol goes off accidentally

A police constable attached to the Quick Response Team (QRT) of Mumbai police suffered an injury after his service pistol fired accidentally.
The incident took place yesterday morning outside a five-star hotel near Gateway of India in south Mumbai, police said today.
Constable Laxman Raut (29) was checking his Glock pistol sitting in a patrolling vehicle when it suddenly went off and the bullet hit his hand.
He was taken to a government-run hospital for treatment.
The gunshot led to a momentary panic in the area.
