penpusher,

It can be used provided it is cut properly and sun dried slowly. KAshmiri walnut is spectacular - a top US ginsmith told me that he thought that if India tried to cultivate the wood properly and scientifically expoit this natural resource in a scientific manner, it would be worth a lot of money. Other woods that can be used include pistacchio which is sometimes even more highly figured than walnut and teak which is dense and strong but plain.
