Hi Sukirtshobhan,
To the best of my knowledge, you cannot own a semiautomatic rifle in India, unless you have specific permission.
My choice for caliber would be 30-06 & 7x57, considering ammo for both is always available.
Regards,
MC

30-06 for classic, .22 for cheaper, easily available rounds.

If availability of ammo is not an issue go with 6.5x57

The choice of a 6.5x57 is interesting.

The other calibers are pretty bog standard and ammo is available- if you are happy to pay the price.
But the 6.5x57?
It’s similar to the 6.5x55 Swede, ballistics wise, but a bit of a niche offering. Used in Germany for deer stalking and their strict laws which specify approx 1500 fpe at 100m
RWS offers loads from 90-140 gr IIRC.

Not entirely correct , You are allowed to own a semi automatic in NPB Rifle License , provided its of .22LR bore only. For all other caliber except .22LR, Semi Automatic is prohibited. I just purchased a Browning SA-22 for my friend on 18th Dec, and found few semi's are available with different dealers.

In india we do have m1 garand in 30 06 which is a semi auto rifle ,but the gas port is punctured with holes so that the semi auto mechanism does not work , you will have to manually cock it each time.

I haven't handled a Browning 22 Auto in quite some time. My brother has one that he bought new years ago. Based on this, I can say that they are a very fine firearm, indeed.

Sorry for the late comment. The 6,5x57 was quite popular in the 60s-70s where I live and hunt but it was abandoned when US designed ammo became more available. Moreover, it is produced, as far as I know, only by few companies.
Better you follow the suggestion of .30- 06 (powerful and available everywhere in world) or .22 LR (inexpensive, minimum recoil, and even more available than .30-06)
